In 1967 I was one of several hundred college students at Arrowhead Springs, CA, attending a Campus Crusade for Christ conference. There was a speaker by the name of Hal Lindsey, who had recently published a book entitled, The Late Great Planet Earth. He stepped up to the podium and uttered a sentence that I can hear in my mind now 50 years later. He said, "I believe you are the generation that will not experience physical death." It rocked me to the core of my spiritual being. He was, of couse, making reference to the rapture of the Church.
It is not the point of this article to discuss or debate the rapture (and I know that not everyone believes in one). I am going to focus on the fulfilled prophecy of these current days leading up to the Tribulation Period. It is quite evident to me and many other Christians who are in the know about prophecy and current events, that what we are witnessing today in the news is the literal fulfilment of prophecy given thousands of years ago, and it is all converging in this generation. What I heard Hal Lindsey say 50 years ago is coming true in my generation.
Even though no one can know the day nor the hour when Jesus will return or call us up to be with him, it is possible to know the general time or generation in history. That time has arrived. It is upon us!
We are told several places in the Bible to be watchful and alert to the signs of the coming of the Lord, lest it comes upon us like a thief in the night, and we are unprepared. (See Matthew 24:42-44, Luke 21:34-36, I Thess. 4:13, and 5:2-4).
Although there have always been fulfilled prophecies down through history, all prophecies at the present time are converging. I am going to list 20 being literally fulfilled right now, and these are only some of the more obvious ones. They are not in order of importance.
1. Knowledge has increased dramatically (Daniel 12:4). With all the advances in science, medicine, and technology, now we have the development of artificial intelligence and the merging of technology with the human body.
2. Nations are rising against nations.
3. Kingdoms are rising against kingdoms. "Kingdoms" means "people groups" in the original language. Think about how true that is.
4. There are famines.
5. There is an increase in earthquakes. As of this writing earthquake activity around the globe is three times higher than normal, and within the last week there have been 121 quakes of at least 4.5 magnitude (Source: U.S. Geological Survey).
6. Christians are hated by all nations.
7. There is total disregard for law and order.
8. There is a love that has "grown cold" because of all the evil and lawlessness (Prophecies 2-7 are taken from Matthew 24).
9. Terrorism is mentioned in Luke 21.
10. Luke 21 also mentions Christians being brought before government authorities.
11. There is dismay among nations.
12. There is perplexity at the "roaring of the sea and waves.“ We are witnessing storms where even meteorologists have said they have never seen anything like it (prophecies 9-12 taken from Luke 21).
13. I Timothy 4 says that people will give attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.
14. The above verse also adds that many will no longer even have a conscience against immorality and evil.
15. It is right now as it was in the days of Noah before the flood of judgment. There is evil continually (Matthew 24:37 and Genesis 6:11-13).
16. Men are slaying one another with the sword. Think of ISIS! (Revelation 6:8)
17. Israel is a nation again, and the third Jewish temple is ready to be built (Rev. 11:1-2).
18. The potential for war in the Middle East against Israel is building day by day (Ezekiel 38-39).
19. There is pestilence, the definition of which is contagious epidemics. Drug resistant diseases are infiltrating the globe (Revelation 6:8).
20. Romans 1:28 says that people will do things that are "not proper." Stop and think for a moment about how many things are going on in our culture that are immoral and violate natural laws and biology.
Scripture speaks of the most terrible time to ever hit this planet. It will be so terrible that people won't want to be here. What we are seeing now in terms of evil, corruption, immorality, extreme weather, and lawlessness and disorder, are nothing compared to what the world and its inhabitants will experience during the Tribulation Period. Read Revelation 16 to get a taste of what it will be like. Here is one example taken from that chapter of potential literal fulfillment.
Verse 21 says, "And huge hailstones, about one hundred pounds each, came down from heaven upon men..." Before you laugh and say it can't be literal to have hailstones this large, consider this. Several years ago NASA scientists, while observing the Comet Halley, discovered that its core was surrounded by hailstones described as weighing one hundred pounds each. Comets can produce hailstones of this size. Combine this with what Job 38:22-23 says. "...Have you seen the storehouses of the hail which I have reserved for the time of distress..." Daniel 12:1 describes the Tribulation Period as "a time of distress."
Judgment is coming for those who have willfully chosen to reject God and the grace offered through his Son, Jesus Christ, who was and is God in human flesh. Believe on him as your one and only Savior. He died for your sins and rose from the dead. He offers grace, forgiveness for your past, and hope for the future. John 5:24 records Jesus' own words: "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. "
