Jesus stood before Pilate and stated that His presence among the Jewish people was to “bear witness to the Truth.” Pilate sarcastically responded by saying, “What is truth?” (John 18:37, 38) Some months before His mock trial, Jesus told Philip that He was, “The way, the truth, and the life…” (John 14:6) To understand Scripture, we need to center our attention on the personage of Jesus. He was totally human as well as completely divine. People spend so much time trying to understand the Trinity and so little time grasping the “duality” of Jesus. It would be advantageous for the Believer to go through the Gospels and distinguish between Jesus’ human and divine natures. One day, near Bethany, He was hungry. (Human) (Mark 11:12) On another day, in the midst of a storm on the Sea of Galilee, “He arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” (Divine) (Mark 4:39) In the battle at Gethsemane, Jesus cried out that, “If it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou wilt.” (Human) (Matthew 26:39) Days prior to that occasion, Jesus would acknowledge His divinity by praying, “That they all may be one: as Thou, Father, art in me, and I in Thee…” and “…even as We are one.” (Divine) (John 17: 21, 22) These are only two examples of the dualistic nature of Jesus.
Jesus’ continual communication with His heavenly Father had a direct impact on His earthly ministry. Jesus told Philip that “He who has seen me has seen the Father.” (John 14:9) Jesus attempted to show those who would listen, that by promoting the Truth He became the Truth. He identified His Divine nature through human interaction. We are not divine, but the same Truth that Jesus experienced and became can rest upon every Believer. For that to become a reality, we need to exhibit the spirit man. The Scriptures tell us to “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2) What concerns me is that we have not learned how to adjust our thoughts and verbal patterns so as to activate our spirit man. The political quagmire that is facing our nation has a direct influence on so many Christians. The redundancy of negativity by Believers, especially on Facebook and other social outlets, has a spirit quenching effect. To have Believers dwell on the negatives of life at the expense of spiritual inquiries will blur our spiritual vision. Christians are part of a Kingdom that is not of this world. But as long as we dwell in our clay vessels, we will travel within the confines of this carnal kingdom. The Bible states that Christians are “strangers and pilgrims…” (I Peter 2:11) When we stop talking about the Kingdom, we will mimic an earthly kingdom that sows discord among people. Christians need to stop exposing the flaws of the worldly and start centering on promoting the flawless attributes of the Kingdom of God.
For thirty years, Jesus prepared for His ministry. (Luke 2:42, 49) I believe He spent years studying the Scriptures and praying. His divine nature witnessed His human nature. His earthly life was influenced by Spiritual Truth. He became so filled with Truth that He became The Truth. Again, I state that we are not divine, but the Divine nature of God rests in our spirits. When we allow our spirits to digest the Truth we will become more like Jesus. When we adjust our inner “wicks,” our lives will continue to glow brighter in this dark world. Let us center on the Truth and walk as Jesus walked.
