"He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than He blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff. (Isaiah 40:23-24)
In my recent blog entitled "The Handwriting On The Wall" I paralleled an ancient prophetic feast
The feast was in the city of Babylon for King Belshazzar had set in motion a great feast. Among the invitees were a thousand of his nobles. (Daniel 5:1)
This was not a royal state dinner, but simply a drunken party, as no official protocol was in effect. King Belshazzar got the party going when he gave orders to bring him the gold and silver vessels which his father had taken from the temple in Jerusalem. As the party proceeded, all were drinking and praising the gods of gold, silver, bronze and iron, wood and stone. (Daniel 5:2-4)
King Belshazzar failed to realize it, but he was celebrating his own funeral, as was prophesied by the prophet Jeremiah about fifty years before. (Jeremiah 50:1-3, 9) (Jeremiah 51:11,28) (Jeremiah 51:53) (Jeremiah 50:24) (Jeremiah 51:36) (Jeremiah 51:39)(Jeremiah 27:6-7)
So now, let us fast-forward to today's America. How does this scenario parallel America today? That particular period of history is much like our culture of today. (Hosea 8:1-4, 7, 12) Babylon actually began as the city of Babel, the city of Nimrod who attempted to oppose God (Genesis 11:1-9), much like America is doing today.
Like Babylon, America has its great architectural structures, our modern technologies, our human secular pride, our ungodly governments, our unjust laws, our unholy sensual drinking and making merry, our "me" culture, and the list goes on and on.
Can't you pick any number of American scenes, close your eyes and imagine you are in King Belshazzar's palace, in his great ballroom and having the time of your life?
Is God's handwriting now on the walls of the stately Washington D.C buildings? Is it on the White House wall? Is it on the Capitol building wall? Is it on the Supreme Court wall? Is God's judgment coming or is it already here? Like King Belshazzar, by the time he saw what was coming, God's judgment on his own life, it was too late. Is it too late for America?
You see, our society has succumbed to promoting a secular way of life, a lot like King Belshazzar. We have lost or destroyed our Biblical values, as God's values are now mocked in our so-called Christian nation. Unless these social trends are reversed, our country may face the same destructive judgement as did ancient Babylon. (Isaiah 3:9)
So, actually where is America now? Just what has happened to this great country of ours? One need not look any further than the local news stand, the national TV news media or even the next door neighbor, to see that America is severely divided more than ever before. Yes, it's America's big split.
In addition to this political division of America, the various news outlets have even given this division of opinion a more juvenile flavor.
You see, we of America's electorate would need be color blind or be ignorant of our basic ABC's not to be able to distinguish this divide. Mixed in with today’s political and social demagoguery we now have what's referred to as "red states" and "blue states". Why not Royal Purple ? (Numbers 4:13)
We have those of the populace leaning to the right and those leaning to the left. Why can't all the politically minded simply reach a happy medium by both factions moving to the center? God's center that is.
And in parallel to these red flags, no pun intended, we now have the distinct pleasure of a simple one letter characteristic of the various political affiliations. We have the (D) suggesting Democrat, the (R) suggesting Republican and the (I) suggesting Independent, as a political acronym for one's speaking discourse. Why not an (A) for American? Or better still a (C) for Christian?
Along with making for good visual TV press, this persuasion is supposed to signify the difference between the liberal and the conservative populace in living grammatical color. A rather Juvenile effect for a would-be professional world, wouldn't you say? I guess all of these infantile characteristics are meant to represent that of a free country.
And in spite of this obvious non-debatable separation, we still have a noticeable objection from some of the well-known celebrities. Some highly exposed folks just can't be satisfied.
I remember when just a mere lad, if I didn't get my way at play, I would just pack up my toys and head home. This was what was referred to as a childish temper tantrum, a childish outburst or fit of temper for not getting my way.
Now I ask you, has America's populace not grown out of the childhood stage? It seems as if a certain segment of our population has regressed back into that of a childhood temper tantrum stage. Reference today's society.
I realize, in recent years we have seen an uptake of cynicism among America's electorate. Many of our populace has apparently lost all respect for politics, politicians and government.
So what has caused this divide in America? Some will say it’s the imposition of power. Some will say it’s all about the money. Still others will say it’s the super ego. Some will even say it's the "me, myself', and "I" syndrome.
So contrary to many beliefs, the root cause is not that of a democratic, republican or even an independent mindset. Oftentimes evil overtakes the holders of these political persuasions.
But I contend it’s a non-debatable factor. It's simply the progressive persuasion of evil. Regardless of the good intentions of all concerned, you can never marry evil with good and have a happy marriage.
This evil got its start way back in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1-7) and has continued to progress ever since. And now America's populace is simply a tool of Satan's evil intents. (Romans 3:23)
In speaking of Satan, the world-renowned evangelist Billy Graham had this to say "The Devil can be very convincing! After all, he doesn't usually come to us and say, "Listen! What I'm about to tempt you to do is a lie, and will lead you down the path to destruction! No, he is very clever, and he will do everything in his power to convince us that his way is best - and God's way is wrong."
In his writing of "The Book of Signs," Dr. David Jeremiah gives us three common ways Satan wages war: deception, division, and destruction, along with a brief commentary on each.
SATAN DECEIVES - Satan "does not stand for the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it." (John 8:44)
SATAN DIVIDES - One of Satan's methods of attack against God's kingdom is to divide us so we don't benefit from the unity Christ desires for us. (I Cor. 1:10)
SATAN DESTROYS - Jesus also calls Satan a thief. He says, "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. (John 10:10)
Does this brief summary, given by Dr. David Jeremiah, not resemble today's vast news media networks? And in parallel, do some phrases of America's politics come to mind?
Nonetheless, God is sovereign. Regardless of America's outlook, He is still on the throne. He appoints those in authority and removes them as well to affect His divine will. (Daniel 2:21)
Yes, it's all a matter of hope, our hope. Hope in the Lord, hope in His principles, and His eternal promises.
When we need encouragement and refreshment for our souls, living in this great country of ours, we need to simply turn to God's inspired lesson plan for our lives. (II Timothy 3:16-17)
You see, His divine Word, given to us through His human servants, (I Peter 1:20-21) for our edification will always strengthen our hope and give encouragement. We all need to be reminded from time to time of the hope that God, Jesus and the Bible offer to us in our daily lives. (Jeremiah 29:11)
Once, several years back, when I became discouraged with life, I read a chapter a day from Proverbs for 31 days. That was my divine therapy.
So, I ask you now? How strong is your hope in today's America? Where is your hope based? Does hope bounce back after being hit by an evil spiritual blow? (Ephesians 6:12) Does it cause you to doubt when you lose all hope of any given man-made solution? Don't forget Who gives us the victory. (I Cor. 15:57)
We all oftentimes struggle in our Christian experience. I'd be the first to admit that finding and holding onto hope in today's America is an ongoing struggle. When we face such tests of faith (Hebrews 11:1) even the strongest of us Christians can find this hope in our divine living Creator.
However, we must all work together to continue to move this great country of ours forward in a world of uncertainties. For our hope, in any given experience should always be in the Lord. We are more than conquerors through Him. (Romans 8:37) Amen!
Author's Postscript
Is it too late, America? Nay, it is not. We serve a good but also a just God. We, as a country, can still learn from this historical intervention of God's sovereign power in ancient Babylon. (I Cor. 10:11) (Romans 15:4)
We must repent of our private and corporate sins. (I John 1:9) And we must strengthen our relationship with God before it's too late. (Isaiah 23:3)
Our loving God has given us a directive, along with a promise. We must humble ourselves, pray and seek God's face. Then He will hear from heaven and heal our land. (II Chronicles 7:14) Amen!
