The makers of this movie have done a fabulous job in presenting this faith-based story. With all that goes on in the world, it is good to go watch a film that portrays a life of Christianity in its truest form. This film has it all; laughter, anger, unshakable doubt when faced with the worst-case scenario, even Pastor Jason Noble (wonderfully portrayed by Toper Grace) who seem arrogant, but don’t count him out yet. When all hope is gone and the odds stacked against you, will a mother’s faith in God be enough for a miracle? In this incredible film, Breakthrough, come travel with John Smith, (Marcel Ruiz’s remarkable presentation) the defiant, rebellious and obnoxious teenager. But isn’t this the trend with most teens? They love to push their parent's buttons. But John has a different reason for his offensive attitude. And you’ll have to watch the movie as it shows why he’s bitter, resentful and alienates his parents. They love him, but it’s not enough to answer his ultimate question about his past … that would be; WHY?
And isn’t it just like teenagers to be daring, live recklessly, and think they are invincible? And although His father tells him not to do something stupid, guess what? … He does, and so does two of his other friends. Though warned by a neighbor to get off the ice, they refuse. And suddenly it happens, the ice break and they tumble into the deep cold icy lake. This scene is powerful and intense. But what strikes me most about this film is Joyce’s (played passionately by Chrissy Metz) faith in God. She sobs uncontrollably for the Lord to revive her son. And her prayer to God seems real and touched me profoundly. It reminded me of my own prayers. Even when the specialist, Doctor Garrett (Dennis Haysbert sensational performance) an expert in cases like John's tells his mother we have done everything medically possible; her faith becomes even more unshakeable. He says; “I don’t believe John will survive through the night.”
So, what is a mother to do when all the medical staff, even her husband, Brian, (portrayed masterfully by Josh Lucas), has given up all hope of a recovery? Do you say your good-byes and make funeral arrangements? Or will you show the world through your faith that a supernatural God still works miracles? From the rescuer, Tommy Shine (extraordinary acting skills byMike Colter) who says; “I heard a voice telling me to go back”, to the outcome, I whispered to my friend, “I can’t wait until the next day (next scene) to see what Christ would do.” For those of us who have relentless assurance in our Savior like Joyce, this film is a must see. And for any who doubts the power of Almighty God, like the rescuer who doesn’t even believe in God, you’ll never think about faith in God as something obsolete and impossible ever again. And if you’re asking why the Lord allows some to survive while others die, this is an even greater reason to watch this classic movie. And like Joyce you’ll discover when you stop trying to control the outcome and surrender to God, miracles happen.
