“He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities and bruised for our wrong doings. The punishment that brought us peace was upon him and by his wounds we are healed” (Isa 53:5 NIV)
In olden days, an innocent ‘whipping boy’ received punishment on behalf of a guilty person. Therefore consider Jesus, if you will. Although guiltless and like a sheep led to slaughter, he humbled himself to the point of death. Knowing not the meaning of Jesus’ crucifixion, nor what he purchased for mankind, his own people killed him. Although one might expect Jesus to claim innocence, he rather cried out, “Father forgive them”. Plus, if needed, ten thousand angels stood strong, equivalent to stalwart sentinels at attention and ready to rescue at Jesus' request.
Ironically, Jesus did not become less by giving all. On the contrary, it was God’s divine plan all along, “the Lamb was slain before the foundation of the world” (Rev 13:8 Phillips). So, we need look no further for redemption because he paid it all in full. Our sins are the thorns in his head, nails in his feet and spear that pierced his side. But from heavens strength and with humble love, Jesus paid the penalty for all who believe on him. Oh, such a beautiful plan! Those far away physically or spiritually dead can receive eternal life when placing trust in Jesus’ death and resurrection.
To be exact, the need for salvation goes back to man’s removal from Eden’s Garden (Gen 3). After the Fall, man’s life was marked by strife and difficulty. Increasingly, corruption and violence dominated the world, creating societies void of justice. However, that particular ‘morning past daybreak’ rewrote man’s history, regaining that lost in Eden. Awaiting now, a pure heavenly city, prepared by God for those who are faithful to him (John 14).
