GOD HAS SPOKEN
By Henry Jaegers
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; (Hebrews 1: 1,2)
In many of his books, Francis Schaeffer repeats this phrase often: "He is a God who is there and is not silent”. What a marvelous statement of hope this is to know that there is a God and he has communicated to us everything we need to know concerning him. Imagine what it would be like if there was a God and he had not spoken? Then the best we could hope for would be that we would all be agnostics who believe that there is a God but we do not know anything about him. I wonder how many gods in the world there are like that? Think of the idolatry that comes forth from the imaginations of men. But God has confounded all this foolish thinking by declaring to us that “God has spoken.”
I cannot imagine how empty and horrible life could be with no reason for any happiness at all if I lived a life without knowing that there is a God who is here. The person who wrote that Hymn “I need thee every hour” certainly knew from experience the reality of those words.
But the good news is, he is here and he has spoken. In Hebrews 11:6, we have these words, “but without faith, it is impossible to please him for he who comes to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him”. God has not called us to take a blind leap into the dark with no one out there to catch us. Behind every word that God has spoken is his promise to us that he is faithful. Although he is invisible, that does not mean he is not there. But as we go through our life and we put him to the test and find that he is faithful all the time, then our faith is strengthened and confirmed because we know for a fact that we have taken the step of faith and found him to be there all the time.
The first words of this verse confirm to us that there is a God and that he has spoken and he still speaks to us today. He is given us his word, written by faithful men whom he has entrusted to communicate it to us. In the process, God has kept his word true, and even though fallible men. To give us a perfect book and asking us to put our trust in it, when we do so, we find that he truly has spoken and he is there and most of all, he is there for us.
True faith is not blind faith because God says, trust me, prove me and see if I will not pour out from heaven blessings that you will never be able to fully contain. (Malachi 3:19) God has spoken and he says “trust me!”
