‘Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters –one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.’ Mark 9:5-6 (NIV).
It’s easy to relate to the foibles of Peter. We can each recall moments when, absolutely overwhelmed with situations, we are left struggling for the right words. And then because we feel we ought to say something intelligent, we blurt out the very opposite. Our gabbling makes no sense at all! Really? Did we say that? Did Peter really suggest they scurry around in the midst of this most sacred interaction and erect tents?
Peter, just like us, did not know what to say, so he said the first thoughts that came into his head. A wise adage says, ‘It’s better to keep silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt!’ When we are lost for words, we’d do best to seal our lips. Silence in these moments is a wise gift. There is a time when nothing needs to be said. The wise person recognises when to speak and when to keep quiet.
Jesus understands our human shortcomings. If we have found ourselves speaking at the wrong time or speaking thoughtless words for the sake of saying something, don’t fret. We can ask for His forgiveness, leave our sin with Him and take the learning with us as we move ahead.
‘Father forgive me for often being just like Peter. Help me to think before I speak and know when it is best to say nothing at all. Amen.’
