Most of us are familiar with the Biblical story of the prodigal son. The son demanded his portion of his inheritance while his dad was still alive. He then ran off and went broke spending his dollars on wild living. Half-starved and friendless, he decided to return home but only as a family servant; Dad had probably disowned him anyway.
Dad could have run after him, declaring his love, scolding, and warning, begging him to come back. But this hard-headed son would learn only through the “school of hard knocks.” Instead, the father tirelessly waited and watched, longing to receive his son back into his arms. And when his boy returned, the father ran to him and crushed him in an embrace. And then Dad threw a party.
Perhaps you’d like to come back to God but you’re afraid he’s disowned you because of your sinful choices. Or maybe you’ve not lived a bad life. You consider yourself a “good” person. But you’ve spent your life pursuing your own success, your own dreams, your own righteousness. And it’s left you empty.
Isaiah 30:18 says, “So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God.” Jesus told the story of the prodigal to show us what our Heavenly Father is like, a father who sent his own son to die for our sins so we could come back to our Daddy’s arms to be fully restored, fully forgiven, fully alive.
The Father is waiting and longing. And oh how he’ll celebrate when you return to him!
PRAYER: Dear heavenly Father, I want to come home. Please forgive me for my sins and restore me to yourself through the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus. Make me your own as I live for and obey you. Thank you.
