Smile often. Research has shown that when we smile and laugh the feel-good chemicals of the brain are released making one feel happy and more relaxed. One of these chemicals is called endorphins, it helps to reduce high levels of cortisol (stress hormone) which can cause an increase in blood sugar levels.
Visit an eye care specialist if your eyes hurt or you feel pressure in your eyes.
Get your eyes checked for signs of retina damage at least once a year especially if your blood glucose level spikes a lot. High blood glucose levels can damage the blood vessels in the retina. Vision can deteriorate or become impaired if not treated.
Some diabetics are more prone to gum disease due to high glucose levels. A visit to the dentist to have your teeth checked and cleaned is very important in preventing sore gums, bleeding gums, bad breath and a bad taste in your mouth.
Foot care and preventing injury to one’s feet is critical. Diabetes compromises the body’s ability to heal properly. Even a small foot wound can become infected, spread to the bone and unfortunately in some cases amputation is necessary.
The American Diabetics Association recommends wearing comfortable footwear which is smooth inside. The association also suggests that socks and shoes should be worn daily and shoes on the beach.
Diabetics or their caretakers should ensure they dry their feet after bathing, particular attention being paid to between the toes.
When sitting do not cross your legs for a long period as this contributes to poor blood circulation.
Consume foods which help to regulate insulin. Foods which keep insulin stable include leafy greens, whole grains, and healthy unsaturated fats. According to Medical News Today to improve insulin sensitivity diabetics should follow a healthy diet plan such as the Mediterranean Diet.
Taking a short walk after dinner may help to lower blood sugar levels which tend to increase after having a meal.
Pray daily giving God all your concerns and anxiety. Allow his peace to strengthen your heart.
