I'll Meet You There
Dear Reader,
Please do not misunderstand. I do not wish to compare myself to Jesus' Mother, Mary in any way. But just a few days ago I stood at the foot of a bed and watched as my son passed away in the arms of his precious wife. I was reminded of "The Pieta" by Michelangelo as Mary held her beloved son in her arms. I understood the heart of Mary in that moment better than I ever had before.
Floods of memories came to mind. The moment your child is first put in your arms you begin to understand that you will be “Mama” for the rest of your life. It doesn't matter how long your child lives, you are still “Mama”. What you don't realize when your baby is placed in your arms for the first time is that you will outlive him.
I took comfort in the story of King David as he mourned the sickness of his dying baby. He lay grieving and would not eat. When the baby died the servants feared telling the King. But David arose, washed, anointed himself, and went into the House of the Lord to worship. Then he came into his own house and ate bread. “I fasted and wept for the child while he was still alive. But now he is dead. He cannot come to me, but I can go to him.” (2 Samuel 12:15-22)
My son said to me as he lay dying, “Mother, I'll meet you there." What greater comfort than to know of his faith in the Lord Jesus. Like King David's son, my son was not spared but was called home. He will not come to me on this earth anymore...but I shall go to him.
I am comforted by memories, family, friends, and the relationship with the Father. The Father knows what it is to lose a Son.
Rest my son...I'll meet you there.
