If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, Sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.” Gen 4:7 ESV
Did you know that the word Sin in Gen 4:7 is not a verb? It is a noun and is speaking of fallen mans inherited Sin nature from Adam.
For as by the one man’s disobedience (Adam) the many were made Sinners (noun), Rom 5:9a
In the New Testament, Sin is a noun over 175 times and a verb over 40 times.
Did you notice that God states that Cain’s Sin nature is contrary to him? Cain was not born again, and even in his fallen state, his inherited Sin nature was not who he was, it was contrary to, or against him. That is exactly what a born-again Paul experienced in his battle when he stated: "For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate."
The Hebrew word used for contrary means “against.” In other words, your inherited Sin nature is against you. Other translations use different wording than contrary, but they mean the same thing.
New International Version: it desires to have you, but you must rule over it."
New Living Translation: eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master."
New American Standard Bible: and its desire is for you, but you must master it."
King James Bible: And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
Our inherited Sin nature resides in our flesh, and this is why our flesh is crucified with Christ before we are born again. We perceive this in the spirit, not the flesh and by faith we believe it. This is also why the flesh that will never be perfected must actually die. If a person is not born again, they inherit death in Adam. If they are born again, they inherit eternal life and much more in Christ.
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. John 17:3 ESV
The word “know” means intimately. The Bible teaches that God knows those who love Him. When Jesus says depart from me, I never knew you. It means they did not love God so they were not known by God.
As noted, even before a person is born again, they are not their inherited Sin nature. But once a person is born again they are a new creation in Christ. This again can only be perceived in the spirit by faith. However, most believers do not understand this truth and keep looking at their flesh, thinking it should be different.
For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, Rom 8:3 ESV
And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. Rom 8:10 NLT
Even when Paul was born again in the spirit, his flesh was still contrary, against him. The same truth applies to us today.
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. Rom 7:18 ESV
The way to defeat this is to radically believe the word of God. That is how we start to walk by the spirit.
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Gal 5:16-18 ESV
Believe it!
When the Bible says you are born again and not under the law – believe it.
When it says you are completely forgiven and under grace where sin is not counted – believe it.
When it says you are righteous, holy, sanctified and perfected already – believe it.
When it says you are co-heir with Christ – believe it.
Stop looking at yourself and keep your eyes on Jesus perfection. He exchanged his perfection for your sinfulness; this is how we are transformed into His image - believe it.
