As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. Matthew 4:18-22 NIV
One thing which strikes me about this reading is that the four men immediately gave up their fishing to follow Jesus.
What did any of these men know about Christ? From the initial chapter of John’s gospel, we know that Andrew was a follower of John the Baptist. So, he would have heard about Jesus through John (the Baptist). Probably Andrew would have shared with Simon Peter about Jesus. Maybe one of these two brothers knew James or his brother John.
Could something else have drawn them toward Christ? Could God have touched their hearts, beckoning them to the Lord?
So, these four men immediately followed Christ. Do we do the same? Did you immediately turn to Christ on your initial hearing of Him? What did bring you to Christ? Reflect on that precious moment in your life. It certainly was a life-changing moment for you. Thank God that your heart was opened to Christ. You shall never be the same as you were. You are no longer enslaved to sin. You have been saved!
