Family
Ping sent an e-mail to Gui the very next day, telling him he would be honored to come to the kung fu academy on the day the news reporters arrived and that he would buy a plane ticket immediately. Once again, Gui cried tears of joy. "Kennedie," he said, "I can't tell you how happy I am right now! God has been answering our prayers! I am so glad we never gave up on God! I am more confident than ever that He will one day change my parents' hearts, too! Thank you for being the kind of wife who prays!" He kissed her and put his hand on her back and began running his fingers through her long, dark brown hair.
Kennedie put her arms around her husband's shoulders and sat on his lap. "Anytime, sweetheart. I love you," she said.
"I love you, too," Gui said, kissing her on her cheek and then on her lips. Both husband and wife praised Jesus for putting it on Ping's heart to come and visit them. They continued to pray for his salvation, as well as for their parents' salvation, that Li and Kim would one day receive Jesus and come around and let Gui back into their lives.
That night in Beijing, Ping phoned their parents to tell them about his plan to visit Gui and Kennedie. Of course, Li and Kim were furious. "Do you not remember that he has shamed our family?" they demanded.
"I never really saw how," Ping said. "He didn't choose his career path to hurt you guys. He wants to teach other people to protect themselves from danger. I find that very admirable to do. I never met Kennedie, but it is clear that she makes him very happy, even if she's not Chinese, and I never wanted anything less than my brother's happiness," he insisted. "You may want him out of your lives because he chose a path in his life that made him happy, but he and I grew up playing together and spending a lot of time together. He's my big brother, and I look up to him. He didn't actually do anything wrong--he just chose a path that you guys don't like, and you guys are being selfish! I don't want to write him out of my life, and I'm not even the one who brought him into this world! I think you guys should be ashamed of yourselves rather than him!"
Rather than admit that they were wrong, Li and Kim told Ping that he had shamed them, too. They told him that as long as they were alive, they wanted him and Gui to do what they said, just as their friends wanted their children to do what they said as long as the parents were alive, and that if their sons could not live the lives the way they were brought up to live them, then they would no longer call them their own sons. They declared that from now on, they had no children. They denied that Ping and Gui were their sons.
