Hope deferred make the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life (Proverbs 13:12). Without a vision or hope, people perish (Proverbs 29:18), and I believe that can mean that people live throughout this life as though they already died. Sometimes when I drive by a graveyard, I wonder if the people who died there could have invented the cure for cancer, contributed to ending poverty in the Middle East, or helped stop sex trafficking, had they still been alive.
Many people live this life without hope, sick to their stomachs, but they would rather do something that is safe and comfortable than take a risk and actually live for a purpose. When we know why we’re alive, we stop making excuses as to why we aren’t doing what God created us to do. It’s true that nothing happens overnight, but as long as we don’t give up, everything God has promised to us will come to pass.
For 8 ½ years, I worked at a job I hated because I thought there was no other option. I was always complaining about my life, in fact, one of my friends even called me a “negative Nancy.” I was always depressed, and the worst part about it was that I didn’t know how to get out of my rut. I had this fantasy in my head about working at the perfect job Monday through Friday with nights and weekends off and a 401k retirement plan.
Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that type of job, but the problem is when we pursue that type of job only for those reasons. That’s a selfish dream. A person who dreams of job security and a comfortable retirement plan has no vision for their life. It’s a scary thing when people place their identity and value in a comfortable job that can be taken away at any moment.
When Jesus asked His twelve disciples to follow Him, He didn’t promise them time off after 180 days, a 401k retirement plan, a minimum wage of $15 per hour, medical coverage, or any of those things, He simply told them to follow Him and He would make them fishers of men (Mark 1:17).
When we follow Jesus and we’re obedient to what He’s called us to do, the career/work He leads us to will be focused on bringing the Kingdom of Heaven to Earth and leading the lost to repentance. All the benefits that come along with a great career are just icing on the cake. Yes, God often blesses us with jobs or businesses that have all the benefits I mentioned above, but benefits and retirement plans are never the focus; Jesus is the focus.
As followers of Jesus, our goal in life isn’t to be blessed or to be served, but it’s to love the darkness out of people and let Jesus breathe Heaven into them through our lives. Only then will our vision and our hope show us why God put us on this planet.
