Our church had a weekly nursing home ministry; as volunteers, we presented a summary of the Sunday school lesson and led in singing. One of the residents exhibited clear signs of dementia. We were amazed when the little lady became lucid; she joined my husband in the singing of a familiar old hymn.
‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’
Joseph M. Scriven, 1855 (Public Domain)
What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful,
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.
Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised
Thou wilt all our burdens bear;
May we ever, Lord, be bringing
All to Thee in earnest prayer.
Soon in glory bright, unclouded,
There will be no need for prayer—
Rapture, praise, and endless worship
Will be our sweet portion there.
Do you know our friend?
“I do not call you slaves anymore, because a slave doesn’t know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from My Father (John 15:15 HCSB).”

Just a side note. Decades ago a youth leader took the group to a nursing home. After we visited, he threw out the idea that people who were of God are better composed that those who are not.
My grandmother, a Bible believing Christian, in her later years had Lou Gehrig's disease. She couldn't talk, but she asked me about me by writing on a piece of paper.
What a Friend in Jesus has a special meaning to me. As I related on an article, for years I fell deeper and deeper into a spiritual black hole. Broken, I came to a Salvation Army church one Sunday, and that hymn was sung. It really touched me. When we got to the line "oh what needless pain we bear", I broke down in tears. I had been suffering emotional turmoil. I had lost hope. I'd go out on the highway and purposely walk in front of trucks, but would chicken out at the last minute.
The Prodigal Son came home. Although I was raised in a Bible believing Christian home, I half stepped, was lukewarm. I now take my faith more seriously and when I start to wander, seek God's help and the counsel of other Christians. Before I fell, I didn't listen to anyone!
Great verse with which to top the article off, Pam! Yes, Jesus is not only our master; He's our friend!
