Short Stories
“Oh my gosh, I can’t imagine doing that!” I would be terrified of failure.
I have never been a daring person, though my mom always told people I was a tomboy. I could never understand why she thought that. How can you be afraid of your own shadow and be considered a tomboy?
My husband, Gary, and I were on a tour of The Holy Land and the day had finally arrived for us to visit—Masada-- I had no idea what that mean. I am not well versed on the bible, though I am a strong believer, just not good at studying.
Well, in case you are as oblivious as to what Masada is as I was that day, let me try to give you an idea of this place we were about to visit.
After riding in our tour bus a couple of hours we pulled up to a large parking area and began to leave the bus. Then I heard all these oooos and ahaaaas and I looked up to see what was causing the excitement.
It is a huge rock mountain, at least a mile high, almost straight up!
And, you guessed it, my worst fear is—heights! My poor husband, who is afraid of nothing, began trying to calm me down by explaining that it was going to be alright. He would be right beside me the whole way and there would be a “tram” to carry us to the top. I said, “Yeah, a big bus connected to chains that I am supposed to believe is safe?”.
He replied, “Yes sweetheart, it’s perfectly safe and dependable or they wouldn’t be bringing us here.”
I pulled my sweatshirt a little tighter around me, trying to disappear, but it didn’t work. I had to be brave and climb into that big hunk of metal and trust it to take me up and back down without killing me.
The ride up was beautiful. We could see forever over the land where Jesus and his disciples had traveled by foot, sharing the word to all who would listen. I DID NOT LOOK DOWN, just out!
When we arrived at the top of the mountain we walked all around the ruins and our guide explained the story of Masada, one of the palaces of King Harrod. It was a fascinating story! Then we began walking toward the loading dock and discovered that the Tram had broken! Our ride could not take us down until they could find someone to fix it.
We waited a few hours and then our guide asked who in our group felt they could walk down the path on the side of the mountain as it could take any numbers of hours before they could get helicopters to come and take us back to our tour bus. Everyone in our group had heard how fearful I am of heights so they were sure I would chose to wait for the helicopter. However, my husband had other thoughts and persuaded me he would be right beside me and hold my hand all the way, assuring me we would be fine. I argued a bit, prayed a lot for courage to meet this challenge and we took off down the mountain side. It is a rocky, steep pathway with handrails most of the way, but at some areas—none!
It was pretty frightening and I was dreading the first space that had no railing. Then, I heard a voice a few steps ahead of us, “Betty, may I come back and hold your other hand when we reach the bad spot down there?”
I replied, “Oh no, I think I can do it alright and you need to take care of yourself.“
“I know you can do it, Betty, but you know, I don’t often get a chance to help someone, other than my children, so please let me help as we finish the trip down to the bottom,” she responded.
The rest of the way down was still frightening but so much better knowing I not only had my husband beside me but also a wonderful young lady who was more concerned for my safety than her own. And Of course, I also knew The Lord was protecting me because I was talking to Him the whole way down!
