Walking away…into the night
The below mentioned verse (John 13:30) kept haunting me yesterday evening and I was desperate to understand this.
He went out immediately….where...to whom….from Whom?
This was Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus.
“Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.”
John 13:30 NKJV
Often when a biography if written, the chaotic beginning and the initial days of struggle may be a bit discouraging, yet if it follows the moment of overcoming and a triumphant ending, it’s worth an applause and such a life should be studied by those who desire to be overcomers.
But what can be learnt from someone who having lived with the light eventually died in the darkness, having lived with the king of glory, chose to walk away from Him and into eternal damnation.
A story is told about how a young man who was a critic of the famous Evangelist D.L.Moody, once while riding on a horseback, he saw Moody and said, “Moody, I want to go to hell. Would you know the way?,” to which Moody replied, “Continue in the way you are going(he meant Godless living) and you will soon reach there.” The young man rode off with a mocking smile. Not having gone much further Moody saw a big commotion of crowd behind him, when he went and enquired, he saw that the same young man had fallen from his horse and died. Moody said, ‘I didn’t knew you were so close to death.”
Judas had chosen to exchange his wallet, he decided that no more would he hold the money for the Lord and his people, rather he preferred the thirty pieces of silver he was promised to betray Jesus (which was used to buy the land for his burial).
Going away from God, we can reach nowhere, for as the verse above mentions, we will be walking into the night, the darkness of our life.
Judas has the opportunity to again meet Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, where he had led the soldiers to arrest Jesus, but this time he did not come as one of his disciples, rather as someone who has chosen to break the heart of God.
The trend of the world today is to live away from God and godliness and live ‘in the ways of the world’, however let us learn this from the examples of others (or soon we will learn it our own examples) that the best we can achieve without God is actually nothing….
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 NKJV
We are not created to survive and thrive without God, yet if we claim to be happy without God, our claim is no better than a bubble of air which will burst in no time.
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
And whose hope is the Lord.
For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
And will not fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green,
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 NKJV
“The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.”
Psalms 1:4 NKJV
Only one life, it will soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.
