In Luke 23:13-32 we read the wonderful account of the two followers of Christ who were on the road to Emmaus.
Emmaus was approximately seven miles from Jerusalem. This would have provided these two men about three to four hours to discuss all the things which had happened to Christ. They were downcast, for the man that they had put their faith in was gone.
On the way to Emmaus, a stranger approaches them, and immediately engages them in conversation. They seemed quite willing to speak with this man who had approached them. They needed to speak about what had happened to Jesus. It was good for them to share their feelings. Little did they know to whom they were speaking.
Wonderfully, Jesus opened their eyes to the scripture readings about Him, and their hearts burned with desire to hear even more. When at supper, they finally recognized the Lord when He broke the bread and gave it to them.
How we might wish that we had been on this journey with these two men, and have been approached by Christ. Yet, if we truly think about it, most of us have had an “Emmaus experience” which we can share with others. Although you might not have seen Christ in His human body, as these two men did, we have seen and known He is in our heart. Through the Holy Spirit, He has opened our eyes. Tell me, has He set your heart on fire? He certainly has done so with me.
There are times when our Lord stirs our inner most being. There are times when He carries us. Yes, there often are just one set of footprints in the sand, though it is Christ and us together. Do not forget your “Emmaus experiences”. Savor them! Share them with others!
Our Lord loves each of us so very much. Do you think He would wish us to miss out on an Emmaus experience? I certainly think not! Bless you Lord Jesus!
