THOUGHT FOR TODAY: “TEACH ME LORD”!
SCRIPTURE: Luke 10:39, “And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word”.
We live in an age where many people like to get things done quick and in a hurry…including how they learn and process information. The Internet has been instrumental in providing millions of people with all kinds of information, right at his or her fingertips. This tool has opened up a wealth of knowledge to individuals, just by sitting at a computer screen. If a person does not want to talk to anyone, they can easily tune people out with activities on the Internet for hours at a time. The computer era has created less social contact with people physically; but more contact with the world through the Internet. Sounds ingenious; however, this is not the Creator of Heaven and earth’s intention for all humanity. The Lord is in the bonding business. This bond starts through Jesus Christ and it continues through His written Word; known as the Bible or Holy Scriptures. The Lord would like to see us: learn from Him, develop a deep, loving, warm, tender, devoted, caring and strong relationship with Him, as well as one another. Difficult to do this through the computer; we are created to touch one another physically. Oh yeah, whatever happened to Sunday meals with our extended family? Remember those family times. Those meals helped to keep people in touch, as well as relationships going.
Luke 10:38-42 gives an account of Jesus going to the house of sisters’ Martha and Mary. As the chapter unfolds, it appears that Martha is the take charge and assertive sister, and Mary is the more laid back, easy going and curious sibling. Therefore, the Gospel of Luke states, (39) “And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. (40) But Martha was encumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me”. Martha was scurrying around trying to prepare a meal for Jesus and His disciples, but Mary sat at His feet as He started teaching. Listening intently and hanging on to His every word. Mary took the “I want to learn something approach”. Therefore, she sat at the Master’s feet so that she could be taught by Him. As a result, Jesus responds to Martha with a sort of “light reprimand. Stating, (41) “And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things. (42) But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her”. Jesus was saying to Martha in a polite and direct way, if you want to learn how to handle your problems as well as relax. Come, sit with your sister and learn from Me. To physically be in the presence of the Savior and taught by Him was truly an awe inspiring opportunity. The teachings of Jesus imparted many great blessings into the life of Mary.
How many of us today would have recognized and seized this opportunity? But, we do have this same opportunity in our day, and this opportunity is found with time in God’s Holy Word…the Bible. Every time we open our Bibles and read what thus says the Lord; we are being taught personally by Him. Godly wisdom along with knowledge and understanding are three powerful attributes that the Lord wants to impart and have operating in all of our lives. Chapters 1-9 of Proverbs attest to this fact. There is a cliché’ that says…carpe diem…which means…”seize the day” or “make the most of it”. Nothing in this world compares to the wealth of knowledge and wisdom that is found in God’s Holy Word. To spend quiet time with the Savior is…PRICELESS. So, carpe Diem, “make the most of your time with the Lord”! I pray that you will have a joyous and fulfilling week.
You have a special purpose in God’s Kingdom. Walk in your calling! Learn His Word, Lean on His Word, Live His Word, Abide in His Word, Trust His Word and Share His Word! I pray that the God of Peace will be with you as you worship and fellowship at the Lord’s house this weekend.
A sister in Christ,
Wanda Carr
