Prayers
Imagine for a moment two friends getting together early in the day for lively conversation. These same two friends will be together throughout the day. As other things occur to them throughout the day relevant to what they had discussed earlier or relative to the situations they find themselves in moment by moment, they don't reason within themselves: "Well, we spoke earlier so there is no need or place for that now." No, in fact their earlier conversation was only preparing the way for these later ones, as they walk together. They were only "priming the pump" so to speak, the pump of relationship that was meant to flow all throughout the day. Similarly, the times we spend early in the day in the presence of Jesus are best visualized as a mere foundation for the remainder of the day, when we are called to walk together. It's all about walking and talking together and then acting upon it. To see it otherwise would be to compartmentalize our days into sacred and secular as though Jesus can only speak to one side of things. His counsel in a business decision, for example, may save us a lot of grief or aggravation for months or even years to come because he often sees things coming that we don't see. We can be listening and talking to Him, and taking matters to Him all day long only on different subjects and completely different kinds of subjects.
To isolate Jesus and tether Him to morning devotions, to maroon Him on that little island within the day, reminds me of the husband who was counseled to tell his wife more often that he loved her, good advice almost any time, to which the husband responded, "Why do I need to tell her that again, I told her on our wedding day!"
