The idea of God riding upon the storms of life, be they natural, emotional or spiritual or all three at once, seems to fit some of the terminology in the Psalms such as "riding on the wings of the wind" in Psalm 104 v.3-4 or David's words "sitting upon the flood" in Psalm 29 v.10. As the One who rides the storms and even invites us to ride there alongside, God controls, limits or governs their impact in our lives and harnesses their force for divine, providential purposes. Just as the force of the natural winds is channeled to drive turbines to do tasks in the daily workaday world, so the forces of the turmoil we experience in our emotional and spiritual lives simply by being alive ("In the world you shall have tribulation, but be of the good cheer, I have overcome the world." John 16,v.33) need not be wasted but can be put to work, can be harnessed for our eventual and ultimate good in God's loving purposes for our lives as believers in and followers of Jesus Christ.
If we accept the invitation to ride by God's side, we can look down on the storm, see beyond the storm, and, even buoyed up in the midst of the storm, with God's help, make the storm work in our behalf and on the behalf of those we love. "And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." (Romans 8, v.28) The first two things I notice in revisiting this verse are; 1) we must KNOW it and 2) it does not apply to some things or to most things but to ALL things!
