Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Luke 15:1-7 NIV
In our weakness and our humility, we know that we are lost without Christ. In our brokenness, we know we are nothing, that our life is without true meaning without Jesus. It is then that we can come before the Lord, asking Him to be at the center of our being, taking control of our lives. We are the lost sheep that has been found by Christ. God rejoices over the lost sheep which has been found.
Christ loves us so much that He leaves the ninety-nine sheep who have no need of repentance, and goes to search for the one lost sheep, the sheep who is searching for His Master. The lost sheep knows the voice of the shepherd. The shepherd speaks to the lost sheep’s heart.
Oh, what a true blessing it is when we come to Jesus. Our life then has true meaning. We are freed from the bondage of sin. We have salvation and eternal life through Christ.
We are all sinners. Be a sinner who comes to the Lord. The shepherd yearns for His lost sheep.
