Rick, Mari, Ashlyn, and Emmy arrived at the science lab an hour before Rick was to give his speech. With his speech being only an hour away, Rick got nervous again. He drank about five glasses of water, only to need to use the bathroom more than once. He prayed every time he was in the bathroom, asking God to bless him with the right words in his speech. He knew he'd be reading from his notes, but he wanted to do just more than use his notes. He wanted to speak with godly wisdom and share everything God had done in his life since he got saved.
Finally the time to give his speech came along. He called Mari, Ashlyn, and Emmy to the stage with him, then hoisted Ashlyn up onto his hip. Looking at the crowd, he cleared his throat twice and took a deep breath. After that, he spoke. "Hello, everyone. Wow, never in a million years did I ever think I would be owning this science lab. I had been interested in being a scientist ever since I was in the fifth grade, but I never thought I would actually own a science lab, but here I am. It's been a tremendous honor working with you all this time and using my passion and talent here, doing one experiment after another and building one invention after another. As you all know, I just built tons of lemonade-making inventions. I put so much time and effort into my work, but I never thought I would be the owner of this place I've been so blessed to work at for so many years. Joe, who was like a second father to me, chose me. Right before he died, he chose me. Now that Joe has come up, he and I both became things we never thought we'd become--Christians. We were both devout atheists who was sure God did not exist. We were taught to believe in things like the Big Bang and Darwin's theory of evolution, and when my first wife died of a brain aneurysm, I was sure God couldn't exist, or if He did, I sure didn't want to believe in a God who would allow that."
Rick lifted Ashlyn a little higher onto his hip and said, "As you all know, Mari and I just got married. She, too, was a widowed single parent, and her daughter, Emmy, and my daughter, Ashlyn, were best friends who always wanted to be sisters. I wanted to date Mari a lot, but because she was a Christian and I was an atheist, she always refused. My daughter, however, had an interest in going to church and learning about Jesus, something I used to discourage when I thought Jesus was nothing more than a crutch. I was mad when Mari and Emmy took her to church, but then Ashlyn was in an accident where she fell out of a tree and hit her head, and God miraculously healed her when doctors were sure she'd die. Emmy had prayed for her. Because God healed the most precious thing in my life, I knew He was real. I thank God every day that Ashlyn is here with me." He kissed Ashlyn's cheek.
When Rick said he only wanted Christian material, everyone had accepted Jesus as their Savior and agreed to his idea.
