Devotionals
Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 1 Peter 3:3-4
Some people enter their day in a flight of flurry by checking email or Facebook or even – gasp - reading the news. But I intentionally enter my day with beauty. I’m not talking about makeup here; I am talking about moments of delight.
I start my day with scent. Since I am sensitive to chemical and artificial fragrances, my morning ritual includes natural aromas. Lighting a cypress candle reminds me of wind blowing through a pine forest on a rainy day. That’s what I believe to be the aroma of God. Cypress is an ever green tree symbolizing eternity or God’s presence. Then I apply some incense of frankincense and myrrh on my arm. Just as Esther prepared herself for the Royal Adorable One, as a small gesture of purification, I perfume myself with aromatic essential oils.
Next, I move into my morning by slowly sipping a good cup of tea while savoring some homemade blue cornbread with honey - something I baked the night before. The honey part reminds me of the promised land that flows with milk (nourishment) and that golden sweet sticky stuff (sweet victory). That way I can taste and see that the Lord is good. Psalm 34:8.
Then I put on some soothing sound such as a favorite worship song or prophetic music. Maybe I’ll move to the music or just be still and soak.
If the atmosphere is right, I pull out one of my journals. This can be my art journal where I spend time doodling my flights of fancy which can simply be playing with watercolor textures. If an image comes to mind, then I go with that. These times remind me of the scripture: Eye has not seen, nor ear has heard, nor has entered the heart of man, the things God has prepared for them that love Him.1 Cor 2:9.
Other times I pull out my writing journal and just let the stream of conscious flow. Occasionally, this leads to a poem, yet at other times I pour out my raw emotions to God. Most times it’s nothing worth sharing with the World, but every so often I get a bread crumb to a bunny trail that leads to something wonderful.
Then I fill my mind with something that lifts and lights me up – something poetic or wise. This can be a psalm, a proverb or my list of prophetic and inheritance words. It can be the person in the Bible who God has me identifying with in this season. As you can see, I am a woman who likes variety and so while there is a routine, there also is a number of alternative paths.
Then, and only then, do I turn to the feminine art of personal expression of makeup, hair style, clothes and accessories. I am inspired by the French who celebrate femininity and uniqueness. French woman are known for their simple classical wardrobe that includes accessories that accentuate their signature style and distinct beauty. Voila, as is my custom, I put on my imaginary wonder woman outfit and I am on my way.
That’s how I start my day and that’s why I enter it with quiet enthusiasm otherwise known as internal passion.
