Book Reviews
One of the duties of a Minister of the Gospel is to provide comfort and guidance to those who have lost loved ones. Even the most hardened of heart bows at a funeral, and the Church is held in reverence. This is the best time for the Minister to shine, and provide a firm example of the depths of love and compassion of Jesus Christ at a time of true need. While there have been a number of solid teachings and books on the matter of the funeral service, there hasn’t been a work that combined the best of them in one volume…until now.
“The Funeral Sourcebook” by Herbert Lockyer (1967, 2013, Whitaker House Publishing, 171 pages) is an updated and expanded work that will aid the Minister and occupy a well-deserved place in one’s active library. Lockyer is a veteran author and Pastor of very distinguished stature. This work is written by one who has ‘been in the trenches’ of pastoral work, and gets to the basic needs of a Minister who is handling this sacred duty. While Lockyer is no longer with us, as he passed away in 1984, this work is a fitting legacy to his writing and pastoral talents.
The true blessing in the work is that it is loyal to the KJV. Also, it is divided into several Chapters that clearly mark out where a new Minister (or a seasoned Minister) needs to turn for inspiration and, more importantly, advice. Funerals have a way of happening to many Pastors at the least expected of times…and this book will do wonders in adding to one’s arsenal of knowledge as to sermon preparation and graveside etiquette. Services dedicated to the loss of old and young loved ones and how the Minister should handle them are included, as well as supplemental texts and poems to every area of need.
“The Funeral Sourcebook” is one book that will get a firm workout by many a Minister. It may be purchased through your favorite on line bookseller, or the Whitaker House Publishing website.
