“A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown. This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” Luke 8:5-8a and 11-15 NIV
Just as seed cannot be made, the word of God is, it is not created by man. It is put to pen by man to be passed on, yet it is not man’s word. It is God’s word. Truly, many hear God’s word. It might be someone preaching on a corner, it could be heard while flipping through channels on the television or radio, possibly it is an ad on the internet. There are many ways the word of God can be seen and heard.
What is done with that word which is seen or heard? For many it is a case of in one ear and out the other. The word never really makes it to the mind, heart, or soul. There is no place in this person’s heart for the word of God. Their hearts, minds and souls are closed to the word of God. It has no place or value in their life. The word can be seen as anything from a parable to word with plain truth to the hearer. Some who hear may get a warm fuzzy feeling from what they hear, yet the word does not take root. It is quickly gone. Some may hear but things of this world will hinder the word from profiting the one who hears. Finally, there is the one who hears and the word is like a sword which pierces the soul. Once inside the soul the word explodes becoming more and more the core being of the bearer of the word. It becomes true nourishment to that soul, and it drives this soul to do such as the word declares. This individual produces a multiplicity of good fruit, and the word grows more and more in that one’s heart, mind and soul. I pray that your soul shall always be pierced by the word of God. May it nourish you forever! AMEN!!
