Precedence Day
A Deovtional written for Celebrate Recovery
In the Bible, Galatians 6:7 says, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”
A dictionary meaning of precedence says: the condition of being considered more important than someone or something else; priority in importance, order, or rank.
A very similar word is precedent—as in legal precedent. A legal precedent is used by a court when deciding later cases with similar issues or facts.
The precedent sets the priority, and affects all decisions going forward.
We who are working in recovery have made many negative decisions over the years that have set precedence in our lives. I know I have. The day we decided to drink, use drugs or overeat or—fill in the blank here with what you are struggling with—set precedent.
An extreme example of “precedence day” is the day someone decides to take heroin for the first time. That decision immediately gets more important than anyone or anything else; it takes total priority in importance because the drug attaches itself to the body: they will do anything to get that drug.
Starting today, we need to take our current priorities to Jesus in prayer. He will lead us and guide us to change those priorities. Working together with our Celebrate Recovery forever family, we will set a new precedent to live free from our past bad decisions.
Making the right recovery decisions today will help us reap awesome positive benefits tomorrow.
Let’s pray.
