Where do we get forgiveness? Not from an earthly priest but from Jesus Christ our high priest and mediator between God the Father and man. Letter to the Hebrews 9:11-15
Last year I watched a video about the Jewish roots of Catholicism and found several errors on it. At 10:05 into this video Bob Fishman says: "A sister became a saint in our church". Presumably by this he meant this woman did special deeds or good works that made her worthy of sainthood. Such are the false teachings of the Roman Catholic church. We are saved by grace through faith and that not of ourselves; it is the gift of God not of works lest any man should boast." Eph. 2:8-9
Our good works are the result of salvation and not the cause of it. Eph 2:10. This is the purpose for which we are saved. Thus good works follow salvation. Rev. 14:13
We must understand that a saint as defined by the holy scriptures is a true believer in Jesus Christ. Saints are also called servants, beloved of the Lord, disciples and other such terms.
These are they who are united to Christ, effectually called, and regenerated, having a new heart and a new spirit created in them through the virtue of Christ's death and resurrection.
The Greek word for saint is hagios
The fundamental (core) meaning of 40 (hágios) is "different" – thus a temple in the 1st century was hagios ("holy") because different from other buildings (Wm. Barclay). In the NT, 40 /hágios ("holy") has the "technical" meaning "different from the world" because "like the Lord." [40 (hágios) implies something "set apart" and therefore "different (distinguished/distinct)" – i.e. "other," because special to the Lord.]
Thus we understand that all saints are different than non-saints. Only saints produce good works and the fruit of the Spirit. Good works are the result of faith and not the cause of faith.
From the holy scriptures we read and are persuaded of these truths below:
1. Saints Are United to Christ and Effectually Called "Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours" 1 Cor. 1:2 "Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified." Paul's letter to the Romans 8:30
2. Saints Are Regenerated or Born Again
"You hath He quickened (made alive or regenerated) who were dead in trespasses and sins." Titus 2:1
"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost: Titus 3:5
"Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever." 1 Peter 1:23
Saints Have a New Heart and a New Spirit A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh." Ezekiel 36:26
