"One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind." (Romans 14:5)
Have you ever given thought to our Savior's last week end here on earth in his human form ? And why this particular week end was so important, in the life of the Gospel ? Basically, this week end brought the full gospel to proration. What is this full gospel, one may ask. Simply put. it is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus . (1 Cor 15:1-4)
Should we then give more remembrance to any one of these special week end days over the others ? Not necessarily, however, we must remember the entire of chain of events of this very special week end to receive the full effect of the gospel. However, as our introductory scripture relates, the Bible does give us freedom of thinking here.
Rather than us remembering Christ death once a year at Easter time, we are instructed to remember His death each time we observe the Lords Supper. (1 Cor 11:24-26)
And I realize, however, without the chain of events on "Good Friday", which included His crucifixion and His burial, there would have not been a resurrection. Without His shed blood, there would have been no forgiveness of our sins. (Hebrews 9:22)
In retrospect, let us look at the time clock of the Hebrew calendar. Unlike our calendar, in which the day always begins at twelve midnight, the Jewish day begins at sundown the night before, and ends at sundown the following night. So, this all important week end was when all the events commenced. The day Friday actually began at sundown on Thursday night.
So let us recap of the events of this all important week end, starting when the sun set over Jerusalem Thursday night, and ending with sunrise on Sunday morning.
Every aspect of this week end pointed to His suffering and death. At sunset there was the Passover and the Lamb sacrifice. And the last supper. He then went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where He was betrayed, arrested, and brought before the high priest. He was then put on trial and condemned, sentencing Him to death. The next morning, He was brought before Pontius Pilate, where He was then beaten, mocked, scourged and led through the streets of Jerusalem to be nailed to the cruel cross at Calvary. He suffered in agony for hours, then uttered His last famous words, "It is finished" and died. They then took His body and laid it in a borrowed tomb. The sun then set on Jerusalem and the day of Friday was finished. It happened exactly as predicted, from sunset to sunset on Friday.
Next comes His Sunday's resurrection, on the first day of the week. What an event, culminating the happenings of His last week end. Without all of these events, we would have no full gospel. (1 Cor 15:1-4) Without these events, we would have no redemption. (Ephesians 1:7) Without these events we would have no hope for an eternal life with our Savior, Jesus Christ. (John 3:16)
So, this chain started with "Good Friday" and ended with "Easter Sunday"
But wait. Why do we call the day of "Jesus' death "Good Friday" ? What these Romans did was certainly not good, from a human secular mindset. (See Matthew Chapters 26-27).
The end result of Christ death was good, however. It was the resurrection, in accordance to God's plan, to redeem sinful man. from the sin curse brought on in the Garden of Eden. (Romans 5:8) (1 Peter 3:18)
You see, all the other religion founders have long since died and are now in a decomposed grave. Only Jesus Christ, God in the flesh (John 1:1, 4-5) is now alive in Heaven (Acts 1:9-11), just awaiting the command of God to come back and get His children. (1 Cor 15:51-55) ( 1 Thess 4:13-18)
In parallel to these events, when did God create man? It was on the sixth day of Creation. (Genesis 1:26-31) And He died for the sins of fallen man on the sixth day, the very same day in which He created Man. The very day that man was given life, we received redemption, through death.
This comparison of days was no accident. For our heavenly Father, through His attribute of "Omniscience", of Him knowing all actual and possible things (Matthew 11:21), and His attribute of "Omnipotence" ,of Him having all power (Revelation 19:6), He prearranged it all, from the creation to the death.
Yes, this last holy week end was very important in the life of mankind. It was the full gospel, and the importance of the Resurrection in action. ( Please read 1 Cor 15:1-11) It was by way of His death and resurrection that we now have proof of the Gospel. ( Please read 1 Cor 15:12-19) It was by way of His death and resurrection that we Christians now have the hope of the Gospel.(Please read 1 Cor 15:20-34)
And most importantly, it was by way of His death and Resurrection that we have the victory and the promise of being with Christ forever more. (Please read 1 Cor 15:51-58)
My friend, if you haven’t already, won’t you by faith take God's free gift of grace, and receive this same eternal life? (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Author's Postscript
There are those matters on which the Bible does not speak about in an open way, It gives believers certain personal lead way, by allowing believers to have different views and still be one in Christ. These may include church politics, church government and the sacraments.
Such is the interest in composing this blog, supported by our introductory scripture. Case in point, the chain of events in this last eventful week end of Christ's life. It took the events surrounding Christ's death to bring about His resurrection. Some religions celebrate all aspects of this week end including His death and His resurrection. While others emphasize His resurrection and celebrate His death at the "Lord Supper"
You see, every church fellowship is made up of people from different backgrounds. Our unity as Christians is a unity in diversity. We must be careful, in recognizing optional church doctrines. In other words, we must be sure that in our local fellowship we work hard to maintain unity while respecting diversity. We must also, however, be very careful not to compromise the full intent of God's principles. Not to compromise the full gospel.
The foundation of our fellowship, however, is not found in any cultural, political or denominational expression, but only in the fact that Christ died and rose for us and that we are in Him. (Romans 14:9)
