Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:34-36 NIV
What does Jesus mean when He says everyone who sins is a slave to sin? Even we who are Christians do sin. So, are we too slaves to sin? No! Christ has saved us from slavery to sin. So what does Christ mean here? I believe that Christ is referring to those who deliberately choose to sin with no remorse or a feeling of needing to repent. This type of heart would belong to someone who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Jesus died for our sins. He knew that we would not totally be freed from the committing of a sin with the acceptance of Him. But, how we view sin, and what it does to us and how we feel when we do sin changes after becoming a believer in Christ. We know that God detests sin and that it cannot be in His presence. That is why Jesus Christ came, so that we could be washed clean from our sins through the precious shedding of His blood on the cross. Our sins are cast to the deepest part of the ocean, far from the presence of the Heavenly Father. Through Jesus Christ we will be able to stand before the Heavenly Father, justified solely by His Son and the sacrifice He made on our behalf. All we can do on our part is to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. No works we do can merit our receiving the gift of eternal life and of salvation.
One who is a slave to sin is not a member of the family of God. Sin cannot be in the presence of God the Father. But, Jesus Christ truly does set us free, free from being a slave to sin. So, through Him we truly are set free. We are thus sons and daughters to the kingdom of God, as we are not slaves to sin. Jesus truly and definitely has set us free!
Lord Jesus we praise you and always thank you for setting us free. Through you we are members of the family of God. You have washed us clean in your precious blood. May we bask in the freedom you provide to us. May we always humbly serve you and advance the kingdom of God! May You and the Heavenly Father be glorified forever and ever AMEN!!
