What’s the Use?
When was the last time you graphed a quadratic formula, or pondered the electromagnetic spectrum? Homeschooling a high-schooler has been quite a time and mind consuming task, which includes this repeated question from my son: “When will I ever use this in life?” I don’t admit it, but I often wonder the same thing as I help him solve for “x”. Tasks that seem so irrelevant leave us wondering, “What’s the use?” such as listening to a coworker go on and on about his foot problems; or, sitting in a never-ending waiting room; or, working in the church nursery with screaming babies; or, visiting an older relative that can’t remember who you are; or, working a job that seems to be getting you nowhere; or, praying for hope when there seems to be none.
Is it possible that Nehemiah felt this way as he worked as a cupbearer servant? Perhaps the same thought crossed Noah’s mind as he looked at his worn hands. “What’s the use?” Can you connect with Isaiah as he tried to give the Israelites truth, but they wouldn’t listen? Maybe you can relate to Hagar as she felt like no one cared for her or her child.
Dear beloved, God has already solved for x in your life. As insignificant as this moment may seem, remember that the breath you just took was planned by God. His power, love, and grace in your life is perfectly formulated to reveal His glory. Just like Nehemiah, Noah, Isaiah, and Hagar, you’ll see it, also. Here’s the use: “For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.” Roman 11:36NKJV
