IF THE WRONG WAY
@
It appears that most Americans think that we are going the wrong way. This brings to mind the cynical remark, "It doesn’t help to speed up if going in the wrong direction." In graphic terms, I recall as a youth being picked up when hitchhiking. Shortly, we came to an intersection, which confused the driver, so that he started to return from where he and I had come. When I pointed this out to him, he remained unconvinced. Consequently, I requested that he let me leave the vehicle, and continue toward my destination.
Now we are urged repeatedly to turn things around by means of some political initiative. While this seems inadequate without addressing the need for spiritual renewal. In this regard, God "condemned sin in sinful men, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit" (Rom. 8:3-4).
By way of confirmation, "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people" (Prov. 14:34). Without exception, if it continues in its sinful ways. Regardless of former blessings as a result of a faithful resolve.
A classic case in point consists of a comparison between the northern and southern kingdoms of the Israelites after their division. The northern kingdom went into a depressed state from which there was no recovery, while the southern kingdom survived for an extended period as a result of periodic spiritual renewals. As if to suggest that only God knows when more time will serve no constructive purpose.
Of more recent derivation, the Great Awakening serves as a case in point. The term is used to refer to several periods of spiritual revival occurring between the early 18th and the late 19th centuries. Each of these was characterized by widespread interest in Scripture, inclination to pray, profound sense of conviction, confidence in the claims of Christ, and increase in church involvement. While not uncommonly with the establishment of creative means of outreach and service.
As for political involvement, one can expect either too much or too little as a result. If too much, then to overlook the critical role God necessarily plays in life’s formula. If too little, failing to recognize that being created in his image implies the potential to act as a steward of his creation.
What brief implications can be drawn from the above as for whom one votes for public office? First, righteous resolve emerges as a critical component. While the term righteous implies compatibility with the divine perspective.
Second, a background in public service is usually a helpful ingredient. Providing that the person has shown promise. Otherwise, we are forewarned not to engage his or her services. Since the pattern is likely to persist.
Third, it is important that individuals exercise social skills. Since governance is a corporate endeavor. Civility serves as a case in point. Its lack shows disrespect for the integrity of others. While its persistent use is a grave hindrance to corporate endeavor.
Fourth, persons are called to serve, rather than impose their ideas on a compliant public. This often results in some sort of compromise, which allows for differences of opinion. This is especially pertinent when it comes to the exercise of religious freedom. Persons should not be forced to comply with public regulations that violate religious scruples. If exceptions, the exception does not prove to be the rule.
Finally, one person can often make a profound difference. Especially when in fellowship with God. As we are reminded by the saying, "One with God is in the majority." As also enjoined, "Expect great things from God, and undertake great things in his name."
