"Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders … And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,fixing our eyes on Jesus … Consider him … so that you will not grow weary and lose heart." Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV
With another Olympic Games behind us, it's interesting to reflect that the New Testament writers and readers would have been familiar with the Games. The ancient form was contested in Greece from 776 BC to 393 AD and Paul often used examples from the Games to illustrate his points. Here the Christian life is compared to running a race. To run with perseverance means this is no sprint, it's a marathon.
Winning athletes often comment on the importance of being focused and running their own race. This verse tells us that our focus is Jesus and as we consider the opposition he endured, we will not lose heart. The race we run is one that is especially "marked out for us". God has designed our spiritual race personally and no one can run in our place.
Athletes often mention crowd support, not only the host nation but other competitors found it helpful. These verses tell us that as Christians we have great crowd support. There is a historical legacy of faith that has been left for us. The exploits of others and their walk of faith cheer us on, encouraging us to persevere.
So when the going gets tough, remember to keep focused and consider him who endured much opposition for our benefit.
