It is common to set truth over against tolerance. So that the more of one, the less of the other. But this is not necessarily the case. Not when they are cast in proper perspective.
“Put on the full armor of God,.” Paul enjoins his readers. “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist” (Eph. 6:11, 14). Moreover, be constant in prayer, and thus stand against the devil’s schemes.
Earlier, the apostle admonishes them: “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love” (Eph. 4:2). Which requires tolerance, given our lack of perception and righteous resolve. So that it remains to consider how these seemingly diverse features fit together in the Christian agenda.
Initially, I am reminded of my experience in graduate school. There was a strong emphasis on tolerance, but a striking absence concerning those who were perceived not to be tolerant of others. How could this be?
This invites us to consider what is involved in a commitment to truth, lest we deceive ourselves. “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Phil. 4:8). Reflect on what is true, and thus cultivate a commitment to truth.
“Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor” (Eph. 4:25). Speak the truth in love. For apart from love, what we say falls short of expressing truth. Which led C. S. Lewis to conclude that hell accommodates those who will accept nothing better from a compassionate deity.
Finally, live in accordance with truth. So that our actions confirm our witness. Obey the truth, and thus commend it to others.
Meanwhile, where is tolerance to be found in this quest for truth? First, by recognizing that some are less informed than others. As a result, they attempt to compensate with an alternative. While in fact, we are all works in progress.
Second, as an indication that God is not willing that any should perish. Consequently, we are urged to be patient. As it is said, only God knows when more time will serve no constructive purpose.
Third, whereas some sow, others reap. So I would as a youth pick potatoes. I had not been involved in their planting, nor would my efforts succeed if others has not planted, and I awaited the time they had grown.
Fourth, while bearing in mind that it is God that ultimately provides the increase. So that on one occasion a reporter asked the eminent evangelist Billy Graham how his converts were doing. “Not well,” Graham replied, “only God’s converts manage.” Just so.
In conclusion, one of my favorite sayings again comes to mind: “The more we know, the more we realize that we do not know.” If for no other reason, this should be a cause for tolerance on our behalf. It also serves as an incentive to seriously consider divine revelation. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways may ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isa. 55:8-9). Not simply because of our finite character, although that is certainly a factor, but our fallen condition—which distorts our perception.
Is God truthful? Eminently so! Is he tolerant? Rightly understood, yes! He thus sets a precedent for others to follow.
