"Lord, to whom shall we go?" John 6:68
At this point in the gospel narrative many stopped following Jesus because they found Jesus' teaching too hard. Jesus asked the twelve if they wanted to leave too and Peter reply is, "To whom shall we go?"
Sometimes we also struggle with Jesus words. They are so at odds with the world we live in which tells us to look after ourselves and avoid anything difficult or painful. But where else can we go?
The people in our life will never be able to fully meet our needs for love, acceptance and security because they are also in need. Neither will we find fulfilment in our possessions, fame or status. Jesus knows the worse about us, and yet he loves us the most. He accepts us (Romans 15:7) and is the source of our security (Psalm 91:2). He has the answer to the difficulties of life and his promise to us is that he will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).
Peter goes on to say to Jesus, "You have the words of eternal life." Our hope lies in Christ. So let's not be like those who drew back but rather let's draw near knowing that Jesus gives us spiritual life, both now and eternally.
