How to Love God
Coming home, walking in the door replays the same scenario: the family dog Hunter beams with excessive excitement. He cannot believe it’s really me. His whole body shakes as if he is dancing with joy. His limited vocal cords try to speak; “Are you serious!? You’re really here? Hallelujah! You’re here!”
He loves me. We found Hunter in an animal shelter. Now, Hunter follows me all around the house. He loves to be close to me. He seems always grateful that we chose him.
I thank God for this dog. Hunter reminds me of what a devoted, thankful, loving heart for one’s Owner looks like. He gives a good example of Deuteronomy 6:5 NKJV: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. I want to follow God wherever He goes. I know He will take care of me. When I feel God close, He is really there! Following God and staying close to Him is where I’m safe. Belonging to God is the most exciting truth in my life. I was lost, and now I’m found!
Yet, there are innumerable differences between Hunter’s owner (me) and my Owner. I’m a sinner, and my Owner is not. I cannot give Hunter eternal life, like my Owner can and will for me. My Owner gave us His Son Jesus to die in our place. I could never give up one of my children to die in Hunter’s place.
Therefore, our love for God should far exceed a dog’s love. God’s more than my Owner. He is my Father, my LORD, my Light. I excitedly await His coming. “Your kingdom come!”
