After Rick and Mari silently prayed and felt Jesus telling them to open their own lab, Mari asked, "Rick, did you feel Jesus put it on your heart to start our own science lab?"
Rick nodded. "Yeah." He exhaled and said, "Wow, I never thought about opening my own business."
"Me, neither," Mari agreed. "Wow, that's quite a responsibility."
"Tell me about it," Rick said. Then he thought. "But I don't want it to be like just regular science lab. It's got to contain science texts that are from a Christian perspective and have Christian employees who are willing to explain everything from a Christian perspective, none of this Darwin or Big Bang stuff."
Mari nodded, and she and Rick prayed that they would find Christian employees to work at their lab. When they were done praying, Mari pointed out that there was a building downtown, an abandoned warehouse, that was up for lease. It had plenty of space. Rick agreed that would be a perfect place to work. All they would need was a bank loan. They would each call their banks the next day. It was late and the girls had to go to bed. They were still snuggled on their parents' laps. Rick and Mari kissed each other goodnight for about five minutes, and then Rick carried Ashlyn out the door and to the car. Mari carried Emmy up to bed. They each thanked God for providing them with this idea.
Rick decided he wanted to get this matter discussed with his bank first thing in the morning, so he left a message for them telling them he wanted them to call him first thing in the morning about an important loan regarding a business matter, explaining he'd lost his job but wanted to open his own business. After that he stayed up half the night drawing ideas for where he wanted everything in the new lab to be--the equipment, the restrooms, the experiment rooms, the books--everything.
The next day was Saturday, so Ashlyn was home from school to answer the phone when the bank called to ask her if her father was home. Ashlyn went into the den and found Rick asleep in his chair by his desk. She shook his shoulder, and at first he murmured in his sleep, "Yes, the bookshelf would look great by the lab window," then snored.
"Daddy. it's the bank." Ashlyn told him. "They're on the phone."
"The phone? No, I don't want that by the window. I want it by the computer lab," Rick said, still talking in his sleep.
"DAAAAAADDDDYYY!" Ashlyn screamed.
Rick. startled, opened his eyes. "What is it, Ashlyn?" he asked.
"The bank is on the phone," Ashlyn said.
"Thanks, Ash," Rick said, taking the phone. "Hello?"
The man on the other end of the line explained to Rick that he admired his endeavour but was just willing to loan money to someone who was unemployed. It was too risky, because he didn't know when Rick would be able to pay the bank back. Rick's face fell, and when he hung up, Ashlyn decided to climb into his lap and give him a big hug.
Neither of them knew it, but Mari, who was with Emmy at their bank at that very moment, was facing the same disappointment.
