DAY THIRTY THREE
GOD’S REMEDY FOR SIN
Quick and Decisive Action
“Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.” (Revelation 2:16)
Sometimes the word “repent” has a negative connotation. God does not mean for that to be so, that is men’s interpretation. One of the definitions I like to give to the word “repent” is, ”making a change with no regrets. ” In the case of sin, it means I have decided to leave with no intentions of returning. It is a determination to act with the purpose of following through. By turning from our sin, we are making an exchange to receive a blessing. That is the purpose God has in mind. But in our verse, the emphasis is to not delay because God does not postpone what he promises to do. I am reminded of the first message given to Jeremiah the prophet. It was a vision of a budding almond branch. The significance of this branch is that it is the first to appear in the spring before any of the trees show any sign of life. It is called the awakening tree and God’s interpretation of that message is that he will hasten his word to do it. That is what we have in this message. First, it speaks of assurance that God is watching over his word. Second, it speaks of imminence. That means that it is at hand and ready to be acted up So we have before us an Old Testament illustration of a similar New Testament truth. This verse calls for quick action on the part of God’s people and the consequences if they fail to act upon them. Delay is dangerous. It causes us to act upon our own imaginations and rationalize the seriousness of God’s word. Again, in the book of Jeremiah we see instance after instance of people following the imaginations of their heart and not acting upon the surety of God’s word. Quick action results in obedience: delay often results in disobedience. Sometimes it is necessary to have time to think about an action that must be taken and how it is to be done. I am not talking about that, I am talking about rationalizing about why we should not obey God. The message, then, from this verse is that our actions must be quick and decisive. The reason is; that God is serious about the word He speaks and He wants us to be serious in our actions by obeying quickly.
