CONFORMED OR TRANSFORMED?
@
Does it seem strange to think of Christians in terms of their degree of conformity to the will of God? It strikes me as a bit unusual, although it serves as a reality check. In this regard, "I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom. 12:1-2).
Initially, note that the apostle addresses his injunction to brothers in the faith community. Qualifications aside, they were Christians. Consequently, those who had assumed the role of disciples. As such, they were bound for the celestial city.
Even so, they appear tempted to continue being conformed to the pattern of this world, rather than being transformed by the renewing of their minds. This was deemed an unacceptable alternative. One that solicited Paul’s urgent appeal.
In brief, they were to present their bodies a living sacrifice, thus set apart and pleasing to God. If set apart, then available for God’s service. If serving, then with one’s priorities giving this due consideration.
While Christians are all works in progress, some make better progress than others. This recalls an articulate believer, who chose to ignore some of the biblical teaching. When asked concerning this, he replied: "I know I should." However, he did not alter his behavior. So that he did not rate high on the fidelity standard. Or so it seems, since appearances can be deceiving.
Differences also extend to what a person perceives as proper behavior. Accordingly, a recent study documented the differences among professing Christians who attended church regularly, and those who seldom did so. As for the former, they were more inclined to embrace the teaching of Scripture, even though it conflicted with cultural mores. Not surprising, the latter were more disposed to uncritically accept cultural standards.
In retrospect, an imaginary interchange comes to mind. "What percentage Christian are you?" one person inquired. He was perhaps willing to give his associate the benefit of doubt. Especially in light of Jesus’ admonition, "first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye" (Matt. 7:5).
"Perhaps forty percent," the other replied, while accompanied with a grin. Actually, he might have opted for a higher percentage, but chose instead to show humility. "But then God will have the final word," he added. Indeed!
Exploring the issue in greater detail, persons are initially encouraged to follow Jesus. Regardless of what others may do. Irrespective of the dangers that may be involved. While in keeping with his teaching, as set forth in Scripture.
Where will he lead us? Initially, into community. Where we are meant to be available to others, and draw on their availability to us. This results not in uniformity, but a constructive diversity. As for confirmation, "Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be?" (1 Cor. 12:14, 17).
From community to service. Even as Christ came not to be served, but to serve. While this involves the proclamation of the gospel, it extends to a holistic ministry. One that encompasses the full range of human needs. "You are the light of the world," Jesus assured his disciples. "A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven" (Matt. 14-16).
Thus are we encouraged to reflect further on the implications of this brief commentary. While in keeping the sage saying, "The past serves as prologue."
