You are young and just beginning the adventure of a lifetime. You walk into a room crowded with people, and scan the faces looking for someone you know. The sweep of your eyes catches those of a stranger just as his eyes latch onto your own. Both of you connect for a moment. Two strangers, you are like ships passing in the night, with wonder about who a stranger that seems so intriguing could be.
As you spot the friend you originally sought and engage in conversation, you are suddenly interrupted by a touch on your elbow. It is the stranger from across the room. He speaks, "Don't I know you from somewhere?"
Could there be a reason why we connect with a total stranger about whom we know absolutely nothing, except for the fact that we caught each other's eye across a crowded room?
I ran this idea past my kid brother. He nodded in agreement and proceeded to tell me about a recent conversation with someone he'd just met. He told me, "Almost at the same instant we both said to each other: 'it's as if I've known you all my life!'"
Now, I'm certain that the Lord has told us everything we need to know in His Word, but He certainly hasn't told us everything. We simply wouldn't have the ability to grasp even a fraction of it all. But, I do suspect that the Lord "drops a hint" of His glory that, in paying attention, could lead us to a deeper understanding. Or, at least, He reveals something for us to ponder, even if it amounts to simple speculation looking for correction or further confirmation.
I believe the Lord has a reason for crossing our path in life with some and not with others; it has to do with His purposes. But, what if there is a deeper mystery? Certain scripture verses peak my curiosity. "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you" we read in Jeremiah. I tended to think that would be like the author of a story mentally "knowing" the characters she plans to put down on paper. But, could there be more to it?
A couple more references hint at something going on behind the scenes of which we are unaware. We read in Matthew 18: "See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven." And again, in Ephesians 2: "And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus…."
So, do these "hints" suggest we could be in two places at once, both in the flesh as well as in the spirit? Both the actors on the stage and the members of the audience observing the drama of life we live now? And, could we "recognize" a stranger we meet in the flesh, because we are already, unknowingly, known to each other in the spirit? So many questions!
Some folks talk as if we become angels when we die, watching over loved ones who remain behind. Angels are, after all, called "ministering spirits." They are (an earlier) part of God's creation. But, what if God who knew us before He formed us in the womb had already created each spirit that would become your individual spirit and mine, our breath of life through which His Spirit bears witness with our spirit? (Romans 8:16)
Could it be that what we refer to as a "guardian angel" does double duty watching over us, as both the spirit residing in our innermost invisible-self as well as the messenger and ministering angel connecting us to the heart of our Creator, Redeemer and Comforter?
If so, it would help me make better sense of some of my life's experiences, especially of hearing that still small Voice at critical moments. I think pondering God's Word in my heart, and making connections through intercessory prayer, amplifies the wonder of creation. And, perhaps it helps us understand why we discover such "kindred spirit" friends and family members that we cannot imagine trying to live without.
In him [Jesus] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. –Ephesians 1:7-10
