I recently heard a young woman lament that the world is a dark place and she would not want to bring children into it. She apparently viewed life through the lens of fear and bitterness. Such emotions can distort our perceptions of even the good around us.
God wants us to look at the world through a different lens. In Isaiah 6:3, angelic beings cried out, “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of his glory’” (NASB - Italics mine). Those awestruck worshippers understood that despite the damage sinful mankind has inflicted upon themselves, each other, and the natural world, the goodness and beauty of the Lord is still present and active. With God’s help, we can have that same perspective. Through eyes of joy, hope, and faith, we can see his continuous work on our behalf as he heals, reconciles, provides, and restores, even in the darkest of circumstances.
When Jesus died on a Roman cross, his disciples must have concluded all was lost. Yet through that seemingly tragic event, our heavenly Father defeated evil and death. He made the way for each of us to live eternally, to find peace with him and with each other, and experience his transforming love and power. When we forsake our sins and yield our lives to him, he comes to live in us, to free us to work with him in bringing his good and loving will to pass---to increase the display of his glory in this world.
Lord, help us see the good things you are doing, to focus on the joy and beauty around us even in the midst of the havoc our disobedience has caused.
