Joli’s heart was heavy. She was only 19 and she felt all alone, despite having a great loving family. She was usually the life of the party. She had many friends. Life was good until now. Right now, she was seated at the Abortion Clinic. Her boyfriend had told her to get rid of ‘it’. Her friends reminded her of how young she was. They had ‘life’ ahead of them and this ‘thing’ shouldn’t debar her from enjoying life.
Her mother only got to know last night. What else would she say? She was a fanatic who attended church every Sabbath. She was one of those ‘sisters’ who yelled amen! In affirmation of anything said on the pulpit. She was always kept busy with one activity or another for brethren. Worst of all, all she said to her was punctuated by streams of bible verses. She had either a song or a verse. Whenever Joli returned from school, she would say something like ‘Oh my princess is back from Uni, Praise the Lord from whom all blessings flow, praise him for his benefits’ and she would go on and on. Whenever she was on her way back to school, her mum would burst into another heartfelt prayer. Yes, she was that kind of woman.
Heavens only knows how and why she wondered into her room last night. She had seen a note she pasted on her table with the address of the Abortion clinic and the time of the appointment. Joli thought she would lose her peace and scream and yell if she knew she was pregnant and was planning to put an end to it through the ‘procedure’. Well she didn’t. She calmly sat on her bed and beckoned to her to sit down. She held her hands, and one after the other, she spoke words that seem like fire piercing her soul. First it was Psalm 127:3 – children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward, then Psalm 139:13-16
‘For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them’.
Joli looked away, tears welled up. She didn’t want to do it but she was left with no option. She couldn’t walk about with a bump at 19 in University? What would she do with a baby at this time? Push it around in pram in school? How would she cope with bringing up a child and rushing to lectures and studying in the library? They were world apart. Her mother continued with more verses and she ended with Exodus 20:13. Her voice echoed the short verse ‘You shall not murder’. Mum simply pleaded with her. Joli wiped her eyes and faced her mum, ‘Mum, I know I have let you down but I have to do what I have to do’, You have lived your own life, made your own choices, but now I have to do what I have to do. She got up and left her mum in her room.
She had woken up early the next day. Not that she slept anyway. She kept wondering if this 6 week foetus was truly human. Would she be killing a man or woman actually if she went for the ‘procedure’? wouldn’t that just be, being in control of her life? Being responsible for her life? She thought of Jack. He wasn’t picking her calls since she said she wasn’t going for the abortion. Did he care that this was their child? It wasn’t really a thing of love, but they understood each other and just clicked on all levels. Their little play was not meant to lead to conception. They did try precautions as advised but the play got intense and the precaution gave way. They didn’t think much of it at the time. Little did they know that a life eventhough tiny had began within hours of their play. Now it was time to get rid of the outcome of their intimacy.
At the clinic, Joli filled the forms. Let’s just get this over and done with, she thought. She looked around and saw some frightened faces, some were bold and carefree. It was soon her turn. She went into Dr Nelson’s office. He kept a straight face and talked her through the procedure. She would be given pain relief, she was to keep as still as possible, it was going to be over soon. He washed his hands and reached for sterilised equipments. She laid on the bed and closed her eyes tightly. Just as things were about to get started, Dr Nelson’s mobile phone rang and his expressionless face suddenly lit up. ‘Oh, I must pick this call’. Hello? Hello? Hey! Sonny, how are you? Are you there now, have you checked into the hotel? I’m so proud of you son. Trust me, I’m not going to miss any moment of your great day? 1st class in Aeronautic Engineering? Are you kidding me? I’m boarding the first flight tomorrow and will be there to see you graduate boy! Alright, thanks for letting me know you landed safe. Ive got a procedure to do right now. Love you son, alright bye’
Joli listened to the conversation and was shaken for some reason she could not explain. Then she heard her mother’s voice quoting scripture after scripture. You shall not kill, you were fearfully made, Children are a heritage. She heard her mother telling the children’s story at church and she heard how they giggled in delight. Her mind raced to and fro. Dr Nelson’s son must have been a foetus at some point too, now he is graduating and his father seemed so proud, so happy. What could this unknown child in her too be in 20years? Whatever it was, this ‘procedure’ would certainly kill the child and all destinies tied to it.
Suddenly she heard from a distant ‘Miss, are you alright’ let’s get this over and done with. She asked feebly ‘what’? Dr Nelson looked puzzle, ‘the abortion!’ he snapped. ‘ I have 8 other clients out there and we need to get going’. Joli suddenly felt a surge of power, an energy that helped her sit up quick. She found her voice and said ‘no thanks Doctor. Thanks for your help’. She got up and started dressing up. ‘I am not going to kill an innocent child, I am not going to abort a destiny, a generation, I will not sin against God…I will give this child a chance. He might be the next Engineer in years to come’. Dr Nelson apologised profusely,’ sorry I know it wasn’t professional to take the call but I had to, I’d been waiting for that call from the United States…’
Joli rushed out of the office and sped all the way home. Her mother was on her knees praying when she burst in. She knelt beside her and joined in the prayer. She held her mother’s hand to her womb and whispered, ‘Mummy, Please pray for your grandchild and please ask God to forgive me’.
Joli’s mum burst again into uncontrollable praise. ‘amen! Thank you Lord, Halleluyah! Mercy said no! Thank you Jesus!
