Close Encounter of a Godly Kind
Our church found itself without a song leader about a month before Christmas and since I could play a little guitar, they ask me if I would come to the church lock-in and help the children practice their Christmas songs for the service on the Sunday before Christmas..
I am not too good on the guitar, but I can make three chords and strum a little bit and so I automatically said, “Why, yes I will come”.
What fun they had and I felt like the oldest child there...
We ate and drank and celebrated the birth of Jesus for about three hours..
Somewhere in the middle of all this fun, I was walking toward the sanctuary to practice on the guitar when I spotted my friend Kellie and she had two small children helping them play Bingo. I knew the least little girl was too young to read, so I thought I would just scoot in and help Kellie a little bit.
The Bingo caller would call the letters and that beautiful little girl looked up at me and said, “Do I have this one”? It was so much fun helping her watch that Bingo card..
Her conversation was like this; As the caller would call the names, she would look at me and say, “Do I have that one?' Then I would either say, “Yes baby here it is or no we don't have it”.
Well it went on like that for awhile, me saying, “No baby, yes baby, no baby, yes baby for about 10 minutes and suddenly I looked down and we had a Bingo and of course I screamed BINGO really loudly, like at the top of my lungs and everyone turned to look at the old lady screaming, “Bingo”!
I guess I should have been embarrassed for acting like a two year old, but I knew that it was not my luck why she was winning, that luck belonged to this tiny little girl named Ava.
Ava got up quickly and ran up to get her prize and came back with a huge bag of Christmas M&M'S in all those Christmas colors.
Our Bingo caller, Mrs. Lily said, “Ok, let's do it again”, and Ava quickly got her card ready....
Some minutes into the game, I heard Kellie say, “You all have Bingo”. I was just not paying any attention to the diagonal thing and I looked down and sure enough Ava had Bingo. Well some really loud person screamed, “Bingo” and I suppose you all know who the loud person was....LOL
Well now about this time some of the children were getting upset and I cannot blame them, for they wanted some prizes too....and then someone said, “Can they win again”? And one little lady about eight years old looked at me and said, “ Are you all cheating”? Well now, my mouth kind of opened in shock and I responded with one word, “NO”!
Now all the women running the Bingo decided that Ava could win again so she went up and got another huge bag of Christmas M&M'S.
Then announcer Lily said, “Now this will be the last game of Bingo and it will be a cover-all. That same little eight year old looked at me with a dark angry face and said, “You all don't need to play”! Ava looked at me and said, “I am not going to play, I have won enough”!
Now I weighed all this over in my mind and I thought, “This Ava is a winner all the way”!! I looked at her and said, “OK Ava, you sat right there and let me watch your card and we will see what happens”!
I was so glad when her card did not win ….LOL
After the Bingo game was over, we all went into the sanctuary to play charades. I sat in the front seat so I could catch some video's and a very small child came in and sat down right beside of me and started a conversation. She started her conversation this way, she looked at me and said, “I gave one of my bags of candy to my brother because I did not need two bags of candy”!...
At this point my heart just crumbled and fell to the floor and I just wanted to burst out crying pure tears of joy, but I recovered quickly and said, “That's great Ava”.
She sat beside me and we watched the other children playing and then suddenly she looked at me and said, “What is your name”? It was so much pleasure for me to tell that small child my name for I had watched a very tiny child of God at work and her name was Ava...
Needless to say, this child filled my heart with joy and I know for sure that the world holds so much promise, as long as there are children in the world like Ava who have that much selfless love that it bubbles over and out, touching others with a pure heart of kindness.
Ava made me think of that tiny baby boy who came to earth on Christmas Eve to teach us about love and it is the greatest love of all....
