Healing
Dina went into the garage and saw that Paul's car door was unlocked. Very slowly and quietly she got into his car and sat in the front passenger's seat. She cried with her head turned toward the passenger's window as she sat there. A few hours later Paul came into the garage and went to his car. When he opened the door to the driver's side, he was surprised to find his little sister in there. "Dina, what are you doing in here?" he asked. Then he sighed. "Dina, I know I take you a lot of places, but this time you can't come with me. You, uh, might get hurt if you did."
Dina turned to him. Her cheeks were completely stained with tears. "I don't care!" she cried. "Paul, I know what you're doing, and I know where you're going! If you go over that cliff, you'll have to take me over, too!"
Paul climbed into the car. For the first time he began reconsidering his plan. He couldn't stand the thought of hurting his little sister...or killing her. She was so determined not to get out of the car. He rubbed her back. "Dina, you saw my note, didn't you?" he asked gently.
Dina felt tears clog her throat. All she could do was squeak, "Yes." She continued to blubber. "Paul, I love you," she said. "You're my big brother, my hero. I look up to you in every way. I can't imagine life without you."
Paul got out of the car and stood up. "Come here," he said quietly as he sat on a stool in the garage. When Dina did, Paul pulled her onto his lap and hugged her close. "I love you, too," he said. "Don't worry, Dina. I'm not going anywhere. I'm going to be around for a long, long, long time. I promise. I'm so sorry I ever considered this. It's just that everything in my life was so bad--Mom and Dad not listening to me, Bridget and me breaking up, my grades, the track team--it was all a mess. I still don't know how I'm going to handle all of this."
"We can go in and talk to Mom and Dad. They need to know they haven't been paying enough attention to us," Dina said. "I know they love us, but they get too busy. And it's still not too late about school and the track team. I know you're smart and that you can do better. And Jesus will heal your broken heart. We'll pray for you," Dina said.
"Thanks, Dina," Paul said. "You're absolutely right."
