Is there no meat in My house? I stopped in my tracks as the voice of the Lord echoed through my spirit. Again the question pierced the stillness, Is there NO MEAT in My house? I wasn’t immediately sure of the answer that I should give.
Slowly and methodically, the Holy Spirit unfolded the answer as I continued my day. Mankind is born with needs and appetites. In fact, if a newborn doesn’t cry in hunger, the new mother knows something is wrong. We all know the feeling of hollow ache that signals when we are hungry. It is such an uncomfortable sensation that we find the idea that some children go to bed with that ache gnawing at them offensive, and are moved with compassion to help.
But there is a hunger in every person that is deeper still. It is the desire for something bigger than themselves. Man was made in the image of the living God, made for divine fellowship, made for higher places. Man was made to be a vibrant spirit vitally connected to his Creator in wonder and marvel.
This hunger is a gnawing emptiness that demands to be filled. There are men and women on bar stools and in crack houses looking for something to fill them. There are people who spend hours sitting at their kids’ sporting events, chasing recreation and leisure, staying endlessly busy trying to quiet that hunger. Some work hour upon hour trying to amass fortunes and possessions thinking that will satisfy their soul’s yearnings. They are hungry and some don’t even realize it.
So back to the question the Lord asked me this morning, “Is there no meat in My house?” I have an answer this evening. Can you answer with me, church?
Yes, Lord, there IS meat in Your house. We have been to Your table and You have satisfied us with Your Presence. We have found our reason, our purpose in Your house. We have tasted and seen that You are good. (Ps 34:8) We no longer seek to fill our souls with the husks of sin and empty pursuit.
When we look at our communities, we see lost humanity trying to fill up that hollow ache inside them. Only one thing will ever satisfy that hunger, Lord. They were made for so much more than the emptiness they are living in. They were made for You, Lord. Make us messengers of Your mercy, offering the Bread of Heaven to the people around us. Let us offer them the same life-changing, soul transforming Gospel that we have eaten. Yes, Lord! There is meat in Your house!
