World Affairs
"For You have girded me with strength for battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me". (Psalm 18:39)
I just love those old nostalgic World War II songs. I had several uncles, who fought in this war, and thank God they all survived. Every time I see a WW II vet, you know the ones who are wearing those descriptive colorful caps, I stop to thank them for their service. For we are now " free" because of the "brave".
Recently, while sitting in a local shopping mall, I had the distingue privilege of watching a rather moving display of patriotism. Sitting across from me was a distinguished senior citizen, who was proudly displaying his WWII cap. Although seemly holding up well for his age, you could just see the evidence of his battle scars. Suddenly, as if out of nowhere, a young man came walking up, shook the old warriors hand, thanked him for his service to his country, then disappeared in the crowd. Yes, it brought tears to my eyes, as it did the older gentleman. All those sitting around me then busted out in spontaneous applause. Yes, our country is not dead yet. What a shining example of Memorial Day's true meaning.
Yes, I remember those days well. The food and gasoline rations. The air raid warnings and black outs. The victory gardens. The war bonds, etc. Remember those patriotic bill boards with "Uncle Sam" pointing his finger and summoning you to service. And thank God, for in His infinite grace and knowledge, He allow our side to win out(Jeremiah 29:11).
Nonetheless, now we are in a different kind of war. A war not fought with weapons but a war fighting evil principalities (Ephesians 6:12). And this war, like none other, will ultimately end time itself as we know it.(2 Cor 10:3-4) But I've read the back of the book , and liken to WW II, good will win out over evil (Revelation 12:10) .
Well, as time passes us by, more and more WW II vets leave are leaving this world, for bigger and better eternal bib whacks ( 1 Timothy 6:12). So, next time you see a vet, please stop and thank him or her for their service to our country. And if you sit down with them, over a cup of coffee, you will get an ear full, I can assure you.
Please listen to this nice WW II favorite.
