Quite often, I make reference of KDKA radio in Pittsburgh, PA. We lived twenty miles outside of the city during my childhood days. It was a family ritual to listen to that radio station for news, sports and wholesome music. One of the station’s announcers, Ed Chauncey, would always sign off by saying, “It’s nice to be nice and it’s nice to know so many nice people. Pittsburgh, PA, someplace special.”
That saying reminds me of what my five year-old grandson says when he disagrees with something I’ve asked him to do or told him he could not do – “Not nice, Pop-Pop.” What’s interesting is that he is not angry when he says it but simply wants me to know that he is not in agreement with what I have said to him.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we all were nice to each other when we disagreed with what was said or with the action that was taken? Why is it that a lot of us think we must be angry with someone if we disagree with them? Not so! It does not take anything from your sincerity but does add to your maturity if you are able to disagree agreeably and just be nice.
Do you feel that you must have the last word when you are in a heated discussion or disagreement with someone? Where is the rule written that he (or she) who gets the last word is the victor? I believe that more often than not silence can be golden – that means that you can win by being silent. Remember, it takes two to argue. The stronger person is the one who is able to be quiet now and wait for a calm atmosphere to express his feelings or thoughts.
Simply stated, something to remember at all times is “it’s nice to be nice.” There would be less hatred, violence, prejudice and animosity if we were nicer to others. So let’s keep the stress down and the respect up by being nice to others…today and every day.
