Forsaken by Karen Pourbabaee
“…My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Mathew 27:46 NAB
As we continue observance of Eastertide, it is wise to recall these words of Jesus, this question He asked from the cross in His dying moments. It is wiser still to understand God’s answer. God the Father forsook His Son on the cross, making Jesus to become sin for us according to 2 Corinthians 5:21, that we might become righteous and reconciled to God. Simply put, Jesus was forsaken that we might not be forsaken.
We will not be forsaken because of God’s promise in Hebrews 13:5: “…I will never forsake you or abandon you.”
We cannot be forsaken because of God’s abiding and continual presence with us. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He assured us of this: “And behold I am with you always until the end of the age.” (Mathew 28:20)
We won’t be forsaken because God has a purpose for us. “For those He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son.” (Romans 8:29) His purpose, Christlikeness, is an ongoing work, a lifetime of transformation. So despite the circumstances and trials you may be going through, you are not forgotten. Remember this promise that, “…all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
Child of God, you will never be abandoned. Your Father’s presence shall remain with you wherever you go just as He promised. And He will be diligent in His work to conform you to the image of His Son, Jesus. “…the One who began a good work in you will continue it until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6)
