Speaking about some of the benefits derivable from the book of Proverbs, King Solomon says in Proverbs 1:5 that "A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels."
He implies in this statement that a wise man is not necessarily one who knows it all, or who has already attained; he is actually a man undergoing a learning process like anyone else, except that with everything he learns, he becomes better and wiser. Hence, the above scripture says that he (the wise man) will increase in learning.
How does this increase result? The verse says he "will hear...". Shâma‛ is the Hebrew word translated "hear" in Proverbs 1:5 and it means to listen with attention, obey, consent, agree, yield to. He is talking about giving attention to God's word, obeying it, submitting to it and agreeing with; he says the man who does this will become wiser. In other words, he will grow in wisdom, he will advance in learning.
To walk in wisdom, we must remain teachable. Proverbs 9:9 says "Give instruction (teaching, counsel) to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning." In other words, a wise man becomes wiser because he is teachable. Growing a wisdom therefore is a consequence of remaining open and submissive to godly instruction, counsel and teachings
One way God teaches us wisdom through his word. Psalm 119:98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser...
Let us make up our minds to walk in genuine wisdom; Genuine wisdom is teachable. Stay teachable.
A Prayer: Lord, your word has taught me today, that in order to walk in wisdom, I must be teachable. Help me to remain humble enough to always learn the truths of your word and to practice them. In Jesus' name. Amen.
