"Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” (Proverbs 30:5 NIV)
As Christians, it’s sometimes difficult to dodge the fiery darts that are hurled at us. Recently coming under attack from worldly critics, I felt the sting of false accusations against me. Hoping to discredit my testimony for Christ, they used my sinful past to paint me as an untrustworthy and self-serving person.
The strong emotions these assaults induced kept me from thinking clearly. I wanted to lash out—defend myself. The devil even offered some mud from my accuser’s past to sling back. Thankfully, I instead went to the Lord and asked Him what I should do about it.
Every page of the bible I turned to spoke the same answer to me: Christ is my defense! He is my shield against anything that could ever come against me. It’s true, I was once what they claimed. So the Lord led me to talk about that. I responded by revealing even more mud from my own past. Then, I showed how God had cleansed me by the blood of Christ. I testified about how His Spirit is now at work transforming my heart and mind, and changing me from the awful person I was, into an empowered and profitable servant of God.
Publicly admitting my past sins offered the opportunity to highlight the glorious contrast between the old me and the redeemed me. Only God can change a person so drastically. Peace and joy overflowed as I testified of Jesus Christ and His power to save. I was vindicated. The critics were ashamed and silenced.
God’s word cannot be refuted. Standing with Christ, we come behind the shield of His protection.
